Guest guest
Hi all, Here's an interesting one that came up today. I sell lavender sachets along with my cold process soaps. People always ask me if the lavender sachets are good for repelling moths. I reassure them that lavender works well not only to repell moths, but also mosquitoes, fleas, lice and flies -- it's especially good for storing woolens, etc. Today, someone asked me if lavender would repel mice. I hesitated and said it's worth a try but I couldn't guarantee it. (Since lavender is from the mint family, I figured it would help but I've never tried it myself.) I then recommended that she try mint, since I know for certain that mint works very well at detering mice. Now, I could tell her about the other aromatic herbs from the mint family such as rosemary, sage or thyme but I fear it might attract instead of repel. Have any of you found a good herbal combination that works in this application? (This would have to be something to keep all varmints away... she is using it in a barn to keep the mice off of her horse- drawn carriage seat covered in wool fabric.) Thanks in advance for any help! Guest guest
I'd test out a mix of Cedarwood, Lavender and Mint--it might smell a little odd but could be quite helpful. I bag up Cedar and Lavender for most of the house and mints in the basement, well away from cat territories. I'm pretty sure your friend doesn't want to resort to harmful means regarding her mouse problem but a cat who is a good mouser is priceless. A barn cat or two might be very helpful. Guest guest
I just read where Cheyenne pepper would deter mice. Something like two tsp. in a quart of water, shaken and sprayed inside and outside the foundation of a home/barn. Haven't tried it though. Guest guest
We are having a problem with voles, some lemming-like rodent, in the garden. Just when I finally have a decent deer fence! Would it help to surround the entire perimeter with mint plants? Unless the ICE covers all first. We are having the most miserable April ever, with fresh snow that stayed last weekend. I feel like crawling into bed with my head under the covers, call me when it gets warm.
