Guest guest
i have had a skin problem all my life. about 13 years ago, i thought i had it figured out - thought it was milk. so i went dairy free.......ok, when i was doing well, i'd sneak a little here and there. was doing really well until 2 years ago when i had a MAJOR flare. got it under control after a couple of months. now, another major flare, but worse and i haven't had any dairy to speak of. went to an allergist who came up with a handful of allergins, but it doesn't fit with having this all my life. so here's what happens...... it's always been on my hands in the past... tiny blisters that itch terribly, dry up, then my skin flakes, sometimes gets so dry that it bleeds, seems to get very thin also. when i broke out 2 years ago, it started going up my arms - never did that before. this time, it went up my arms, my neck, abdomen, legs - everywhere. haven't been able to get it under control. the backs of my knees are particularly bad. the only thing i seem to be able to use is pure shea butter and jojoba oil. made a salve with jojoba & coconut oils infused with chapparel & calendula, beeswax, st. johns wort oil, and lavendar. it seems to irritate more so i quit using it. if anyone could help......please? thanks, bonnie (going mad)
Guest guest
OH Bonnie, I feel for you. As you sound just like my husband!!! About 5 years ago he had ALL the same problems with his skin that you are having now. We found out the culprits (Allergens)only by having blood testing done. It was the best $500.00 he ever spent!! He was allergic to Corn!! and about 15 other things. He went on an elimination diet for 6 months and then slowly started to add back the food that were allergens. He was able to tolerate everything except the corn. Now, mind you Corn is in everything. It has a zillion " by product " names. It is in shampoos, bar soap/deordorants, and over 600 different products both the kind you eat, clean with and oh my, it is everywhere. Somethings he does - of course is to avoid anything made with corn or it's by products. We don't eat any packaged foods any more. No condiments unless the label is corn free (modified food starch is made from corn and is just about everything from cheeses, sauces, and over the counter products like pain meds and Vitamins/minerals). When he does get into something - usually unknown at a restaurant and has a break out - between his fingers little blisters, then the sloughing and drying of the skin, he uses a special cream I made up just for him. I call it Cream de la Creme or Penny's Cream. It helps heal it rather quickly once there is an outbreak and he isn't exposed to the culprit again. The other thing we discovered was getting enough sunshine. Here in Minnesota it is difficult in the winter, so he goes to the tanning beds for 20 minutes once a week and it does wonders to keep it under control too. In the summer he is outdoors so he gets plenty sunshine and it isn't too bad then. Hope this helps. I know as the wife of someone that deals with this on occasion now, how miserable you are. Let me know if this helps. Or if you want to know what else we did that might help you too. Penny PS. We sell the cream on our site. Your One Stop Aromatherapy Shop! Guest guest
Have you tried removing gluten, corn and wheat from your diet? Corn allergies are one of the worst because corn is practically in everything because being that its in vegetable oils. My friend has a brother-in-law whose son has a corn allergy and it sounds similar to the rash this poor child gets. They have to shop at the health food store for his foods. Sounds like the exact same rash. Also EOs will aggravate it. With a breakout, I would alternate between oatmeal baths and using the jojoba/shea butter oil and even rosarubingenosa which I used on my daughter during her breakout with chickenpox. You know use it for a month, then switch and use the rosarubingenosa(sp?) oil. But really think about that corn allergy. When my friend's nephew was first diagnosed, we went shopping and it amazed me how much food corn and wheat is in. Hope that helps you. Guest guest
Why don't you just try pure jojoba oil mixed with aloe vera and vitamin e? I do that for my daughter. she has something similar to you but she got it from having Kawasaki's Disease. It works for her. As does pure grapeseed oil. Guest guest
As one who was literally born with this.. I have the same condition and know EXACTLY how you feel. Some suggestions, Since I get it mainly on my hands, it is probably caused by something I touch (dishwashing liquid, dust, etc). Try to remember to wear rubber gloves when cleaning, doing the dishes etc. If it appears when your body bends (knees, elbows, waistband, etc) it could be caused by something that irritates your skin when you sweat. Take a look at your laundry detergent and make sure it is hypoallergenic. Do the first rinse with plain water and then a second rinse with the fabric softener (I can't stand stiff clothes so I use the softner). For the itch, I use Benedryl gel, but it dries out the skin as well. I have used the over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams but they don't do me much good (I have had the condition too long and they have to bring out the big guns every once in a while). Sometimes it would help if I put the creams on and then put on plastic gloves over night so the skin stayed moist and the cream didn't rub off. Warning - the creams can cause your skin to become thinner so don't use it too long. As bad as yours is, you probably need to see a dermatologist to see what they recommend. From the oils side, rather than using a blend, try using one component at a time for a week or so and see what happens, just the shea butter, no EOs added. Then just the jojoba by itself, then a blend of the two. You are looking for what triggers the rash and it is hard to tell with a blend. It can be difficult to get rid of (as you well know). I have both contact dermatitis (things I touch, detergents, etc) and food allergies so trying to narrow it down is a pain. I have heard that baths with colloidal (not sure of the spelling) oatmeal can help. Good luck! I had to finally go back on prescription steroid cream last week to try to get mine under control again. It was either that or prednisone... (I hate that stuff, messes me up for months). Cynthia ====================================================================== so here's what happens...... it's always been on my hands in the past... tiny blisters that itch terribly, dry up, then my skin flakes, sometimes gets so dry that it bleeds, seems to get very thin also. when i broke out 2 years ago, it started going up my arms - never did that before. this time, it went up my arms, my neck, abdomen, legs - everywhere. haven't been able to get it under control. the backs of my knees are particularly bad. the only thing i seem to be able to use is pure shea butter and jojoba oil. made a salve with jojoba & coconut oils infused with chapparel & calendula, beeswax, st. johns wort oil, and lavendar. it seems to irritate more so i quit using it. Guest guest
I'd add eggs to that. Maybe even all grains .... Amazing what food sensitivities can do. Use goat milk products instead of cow milk. ALso, some people are sensitive to cane sugar (I am) and use beet sugar ... about 50% of the sugars on our grocery shelf are from beet sugar. If the package says " real cane sugar " , you know it's cane. If it doesn't, it's probably beet sugar. Guest guest
Have you done anything holistic in terms of supplements? I'm very involved in the canine world and nutrition in which skin conditions not unlike yours are a hot topic. When our dogs have these same problems we also look at allergies. Internally I would suggest considering taking evening primrose oil, borage oil - both are omega 6 GLA oils but have anti inflammatory properties that are very good for the skin. Also I'd take fish oil, with a high degree of EPA/DHA properties..these are omega 3's and also have anti inflammatory properties. Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine which may help with the itchiness. Vitamin A, selenium, biotin, and zinc are all nutrients that are needed for the skin. Are you taking a high quality non allergenic vitamin/mineral. Your body may be deficient of an essential nutrient. You may want to consider finding a holistic practioner and see what they may have to offer but I think you may find some relief with these natural ingredients that can be found at your health food store. NOTE: If there is any possibility of seizures, epilepsy etc evening primrose and borage oils should not be taken. Guest guest
Hi Bonnie, Forgot to add this to my previous comment. Our doctor explained to my hubby that allergies of this type are the - slow type response to an allergen. In other words there are the quick acting allergic reactions - that can be life threatening - you see this with people that are allergic to seafood, nuts and bee stings, where their breathing can be hindered as their whole body reacts and major swelling occurs - anaphylactic response. Or the slow type response like my hubby and it sounds like you too. The offending food or substance - in contact can be eaten or touched upto 3-4 days earlier and then react. That is why it can be so hard to figure out, as most folks eat different foods and don't keep food diaries. This slow reaction often rears itself and causes actually a type of eczema. The allergen is trying to get out through your skin and is actually - boiling to get out - hence the blisters. Then your body if continualy exposed to the allergen keeps getting worse, that is why you started having it spread to your arms, legs, neck etc. What triggered the more severe reaction than when you were younger? Most likely any number of things, stress, changes in hormones, etc. Just plain getting older can make things worse. For my hubby, I think just getting older, as even from very young age he would have strange " dry " spots that we could never figure out. Always had dry flakey skin on his eye lids in the winter and dry patches on the backs of his knees. Until the year 2002 when all things broke loose and he went for 8 months being miserable and got a little better in the summer, but when fall came along - he was literally scratching himself til he bled. He could not sleep. The meds the Doctor put him on it made it worse - why? It was made with corn!! Anyway, get tested by a blood test. Hubby couldn't be tested by skin test as the skin was already to reactive so no skin test would have worked anyway. You will find that if it is corn, wheat, eggs (which were some of the other thing hubby was tested to be allergic too) along with cane sugar and chedder cheese plus a dozen others, and you totally eliminate them, then give it one full month of not eating any of that and your skin will improve. (no you won't starve - he didn't) Good luck. Penny , " Penny " <pennyK wrote: > > OH Bonnie, > I feel for you. Guest guest
Morning all, I am probably trying to the entire world over to cold-pressed macadamia oil! & nbsp; I use it on my nursing-home clients and it strengthens and regenerates their fragile skin. & nbsp; Now, if they get skin tears it is because they've scratched themselves and I can't fix that. The nursing home staff use it to fix their badly damaged skin from the use of that absolutely nasty 'soap' that they use to prevent cross-contamination (I use my own liquid soap with all the nice anti-bacterial, -viral oils). Now, unless there is an alergy to nut oils I would use mac oil for skin strengthening and regenerating and your preferred essential oils. For the major itch I would use Australian Sandalwood - brilliant!! Did I say that I used mac oil to clear up a client (and a nursing home staff member) of psoriasis? Guest guest
if anyone could help......please? thanks, bonnie (going mad) Dear Bonnie, My deepest sympathy, itch can be harder to relieve than pain. It sounds awful. It also sounds like something systemic, a lot more than " skin deep " . Chickweed poultices might help to cool you down a bit, but mainly, what are you doing for your liver? There are tons of good liver herbs out there. You can get Sweden Bitters in health food stores. Guest guest
OK, I know this list is about oils and herbs but... Have you ever done Acupuncture? Sometimes your body just isn't in balance and you need to think internal instead of external. Granted most acupuncturist will also give you a herb to use, but usually to drink. My advice, get acupuncture, you will be amazed at the result. But see a practitioner that will give you daily treatments not just once a week. In China, acupuncture is mainstream health care and when you have an issue you go everyday even sometimes twice a day for at least ten treatments. Then you give your body a rest for a couple of weeks and let the treatment take hold. I have seen acupuncture cure infertility, cure incurable skin conditions and even more. (I work at an alternative health clinic) That's my two cents.
