Guest guest
Hey Butch, I get the leg cramps when my Magnesium is low. I drink some *Calm* in the morning (try to remember to do so every day especially in this horrid heat). If I forget, get too busy, etc. my legs cramp that night... Have you tried drinking Magnesium? Guest guest
Dear Butch, The best way to prevent leg cramps is a mixture called " Cal Mag " . This is used to prevent muscle spasms from those going through drug withdrawal symptoms. I use it about once a week to handle any muscle spasms(not because I use drugs but because of my age). Use Magnesium carbonate (containing 29 percent magnesium) and Calcium Gluconate. 1) Put one level tablespoon (15ml) of calcium gluconate in a normal sized glass.\ 2) Add 1,2 level teaspoon(2,5 ml) of magnesium carbonate. 3) Add 1 - 2 tablespoons of cider vinegar ( at least 5 per cent acidity) 4). Stir well. 5) Add 1/2 a glass of boiling water and stir until all the powder is dissolved and the liquid is clear. 6) Fill the rest of the glass with lukewarm water or juice and drink, You can actually buy the premixed Call Mag at some Health food shops - I just like making my own...........love Penny On Sat, Jun 7, 2008 at 12:14 PM, Blackkat <blackkat wrote: > Hey Butch, > > I get the leg cramps when my Magnesium is low. Guest guest
Hi Butch and All, Al and I are avid bicyclers. We have found that after riding bike and doing a lot of sweating - you have to replenish your electrolytes (mineral salts). This is the Potassium, Magnesium, Sodium, Calcium, etc. You can replenish some of it by using Gatoraid and such. But me being a diabetic, and gatorade sweetened with sugarary stuff and Al having allergies to corn - that is not possible for us to drink. We take along Morton Lite Salt (Potassium chloride salt with no Sodium chloride in it) and after our rides (2-4 hours long) we take a 1/4 teaspoon in water. We have never ever had leg cramps after riding bikes. But let me tell you we have seen a ton of folks get done riding, roller blading or running and after they are done - have such severe leg cramps they are crying in pain. So we also use the Morton Lite Salt which is Potassium Chloride - Potassium salt and the easiest to use, when ever we have done a lot of perspiring. No cramps whatsoever. And we have had other folks do the " Potassium salt " thing when they get leg cramps and within a few minutes the cramp is gone. Before we go for a long ride we also take 1/4 teaspoon of Celtic Sea Salt in a glass of water. This helps before we start our long rides. As we will sweat all that salt out plus even more. (I know as our faces and around our eyes and mouth actually get salt crystals dried on them from sweating and it drying as we ride!) We take Magnesium supplements at bedtime too. Magnesium is great to help you relax and fall asleep too, so we never recommend anyone take it in the mornings unless you want to fall asleep at your desk! Again, read the book by Mildred Seelig MD, The Magnesium Factor. She can tell you all about the Sodium, Potassium and Magnesium needs all backed up with research. Most people are deficient in Potassium and Magnesium and when you are too deficient - you just are not going to get enough from the foods you eat. Hope this helps, if not you, others that suffer from leg cramps. Penny Your One Stop Aromatherapy Shop! Haven't tried drinking it but I've taken it .. I am gonna get some because in addition to your recommedation, Sharon Kerley just wrote me off line with a similar recommendation. I'm sitting here now with a bottle of Gatorade .. went outside for an hour or so to strip blossoms from our first year strawberry patch .. its 95 F here today so I decided to wait till maybe 5 this afternoon to finish because its a bending down exercise and though I want strawberries next year ... more leg cramps I don't want now. ;-) > Sandi > BlackKat Herbs > http://www.blackkatherbs.com <http://www.blackkatherbs.com> Thank you ma'am. :-) Butch

Guest guest
Hi Butch, On the old-fashioned front for leg cramps: I had a lady I took care of during my nursing days who swore by tonic water to keep the leg cramps at bay--drank an 8 oz bottle of the stuff a day and said it stopped them from happening for her. I don't know what it tastes like on its own and my vodka and tonic days have been over for about 15 years, but maybe it would help? Guest guest
It contains quinine. That's why it's called 'tonic' water and helps the cramps.. Guest guest
I just tasted mine and it reminded me a _little_ of ginger ale, but not quite. But not an unpleasant taste. If mixed with juice or another liquid I don't think you would notice it at all. Sandra That much I knew--what I was wondering about was the taste. Guest guest
Wow, with all the responses mine might sound way too simple. Drink more milk. I have huge calves and when I don't drink enough milk I get severe cramping. BB Anwynn
