Cramps are certainly something we want to avoid and if something works .. it works. I am going to check into the liquid magnesium thing and considering that the weather here lately has been in the 90s I have been considering dropping Bud Light and going to Gin & Tonic. ;-) We work in the yard or garden 3-4 hours each day and get soaking wet. We then sit down under a tree for refreshments .. normally knock out a bottle each of Gatorade and then have something stronger. Tanya is into the health benefits of red wine but I need something Ice Cold at times like that. ;-) > Just a thought, > Serra > And a good one it is I think. The Brits kicked off the Gin & Tonic thing long ago in India for the cooling benefits of the quinine in tonic water .. we can tell how much quinine is in a commerical tonic by looking at it under a black light .. it will glow .. and a few Tanqueray's & Tonic will also make you glow. ;-) Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch
Guest guest
Ah Butch, A man after my own heart! My favorite summertime drink of choice is Tanquerey & Tonic with lime....wonderful, refreshing and down right decadent! LOL But I have noticed that tonic water leaves something to be desired of late....not the same stuff that I used to drink 10 years ago....probably cheapened the recipe and upped the price???? A friend of mine is making her own and sending me some...can't wait to try it! Stay cool Butch - TN is turning into a hotter than normal place this year. Smithville has been in the mid 90's for 3 days now with no rain in sight...sigh...not good for my garden! Guest guest
Well, I am more of a lurker but I want to chime in. After having leg cramps, and much research, we have started using soap for our leg cramps. There is NO reason this should work and if it's all in my head and the cramps subside, I don't care at the time. I keep a bar in bed by my feet at night. Hubby stole mine last night . We don't understand it --- but for us, it gives almost instant relief. Would love to know what your results are if you try this! Guest guest
- If I am not mistaken leg cramping and pain can be due to a iron deficiency to cant it . I know I have both things but cant take iron pills so I get it through food I eat leafy greens and I eat bananas for extra potassium ... now i dont have the problem anymore ---- Original Message ----- C. Guest guest
Hi Butch, I'm so sorry to hear you're suffering w/leg cramps. My poor Mom & all the women on her side of the family (except me so far) have debilitating leg cramps that occur throughout the night. She takes Quinine when they get really bad, but that has a side effect of a terrible buzzing in the head the next day (if anyone knows how to quiet the buzzing, I'd love to know!). Initially, many years ago, we went to the health food store (before Google was around) & sought their advice. We've since been to herbalists, acupuncturists, chiropractors, & doctors (ugh!) & been told over the years it's basically a deficiency of calcium, magnesium, & /or potassium. Everything she tries seems to work for a 1-2 nights, but nothing has offered sustaining relief. The electrolyte water from the health food store seems to periodically offer her some relief, as well, but so do heating pads on occasion. My Mom is very fit, but has a sedentary desk job, so ironically, she gets them more during the week when she's been sitting all day vs. on the weekend when she's busy running around. She also has varicose veins, which may be a contributor. My Dad is determined that her leg cramps are caused by a pinched or damaged nerve in her low back & massage does seem to help a bit. Because of how physical you've been, a massage certainly wouldn't hurt & a consult with a reputable acupuncturist is also a thought. (Mom was getting results from our acupuncturist, but she wants everything to happen RIGHT NOW & I can't get it through her head that it takes time to reverse or mend years of damage in something as complicated as the human body. go figure! Lol) I was reading @ a post of yours from April regarding sniffing Oregano for sciatica. could that offer relief for the leg cramps as well? I have some of your oregano for hubby's toenail fungus (that I can't get him to apply! Grr!) & am wondering if it could be the most simple solution to Mom's nightly leg terrors? Best of luck to you. If you find a solution, PLEASE let me know. For now, I'm going to have Mom check into a footstool for her desk. I think .. and I left Anya's post at the bottom of this one .. as a reference. Lemme also add two or three cents. As we age we are more likely to get those night cramps .. many of you (like me) have had it happen while sleeping and have probably become accustomed to (like me) immediately knowing what was going down and immediately jumping up outta bed in a panic cause we knew what we were about to face .. excruciating pain!!! Guest guest
I completely forgot about this one! And someone recently posted it to another group I follow too. Silly me--some folks swear by it too, not just you and your hubby. I wonder why it works? Perhaps it's just one of those things, but it sure can't hurt to try it. Does it have to be handmade soap, or do mass-manufactured bars work too? Serra On Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 4:52 PM, C. Buttles <cbuttles wrote: > Well, I am more of a lurker but I want to chime in. About 10 years ago, I learned the hard way that leg/foot cramps can also be a symptom of thyroid disorders (both hyper- and hypo- thyroidism but most often hypo-). Have you had your thyroid hormone levels checked lately? Sports drinks are great. But for those who prefer not to have all that sugar and food dye, try drinking pureed vegetable juices -- homemade or commercially made (like V-8). They're not calorie free but you'll get the benefit of the fiber, minerals and vitamins, plus the fluids, no added sugar, no food dyes. You do have to read the label on the commercially made... some are higher in potassium and magnesium than others. Melissa
Guest guest
Here's an EO recipe for sore and cramping muscles: In a base of 2tsp arnica 6 tsp base oil(almond, grapeseed, sesame, whatever you prefer) add 2 drops of ginger, 4 drops lavender, 3 drops lemongrass, 4 drops rosemary, and 3 drops vetiver. You can rub this into the muscles, or soak in a tub with it(personal favorite). REALLY hot baths do wonders. Stay away from the heating pad, they dehydrate muscles further, causing more problems. I've been using this recipe for over 2 years on my massage clients and have had good results with cases of muscle overexertion.
Guest guest
There is another one that is even simpler. Put an unwrapped bar of soap at the foot of your bed, between the sheets. No one knows why it works, but it does. Cindi ---- Anwynn 6/8/2008 10:42:50 AM Re: OT: Leg Cramps Wow, with all the responses mine might sound way too simple. Drink more milk. I have huge calves and when I don't drink enough milk I get severe cramping. BB Anwynn
Guest guest
Hi Serra, You can use any soap. I have read that there are a couple of ones that may not work but I just use whatever we have. It may be Dove an Ivory??? that may not work as well. Just don't remember since they weren't brands we have used. I just don't remember and we are in the middle of a move right now. I would say give it a try. Cindy B. On Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 1:24 AM, Serra <serrathescented wrote: > I completely forgot about this one! And someone recently posted it to > another group I follow too. Guest guest
Dove is a beauty bar, Ivory is a soap. Use the Ivory, it would be the one that would work. Guest guest
I have to wonder if you have had your Vitamin D level checked lately. I know there is a tendency to assume that low potassium is the reason for leg cramps, but low Vitamin D is more often the reason these days.
