Guest guest
Howdy y'all, A little follow up on this thread .. I am again in contact with Sarah Chayes ... and I am leaning toward thinking that what is now driving her efforts in Afghanistan is, in fact, a sincere desire to help the Afghan people. Gutsy she is for sure .. no security, etc., except for the AK-47 she keeps under her bed. She did kick off a small scale Rose production operation but it failed due to the Taliban taking over the area .. then she began another that is currently operating but its not doing so well and the reasons why are obvious to me .. I've provided input on how to fix those problems. Here is a link containing a number of articles .. the Radio Canada interview is a good one but its in French. The San Francisco, New York and Washington reviews of her book, " Punishment of Virtue " , tell a lot about her activities. http://www.arghand.org/ We will soon talk via telephone regarding the possibility of a new project to create a Rose industry in Afghanistan .. if she can get the funding we can make it a professional venture with the potential for sustained economic growth .. if she can't get sufficient funding then I will do what I can Pro Bono to assist her as I can in local efforts .. one family at a time. There are many opportunities for small scale success in Afghanistan and Sarah appears to have her finger on the pulse of those opportunities. Of course .. security is still a problem and she has (in my opinion) been quite lucky to date. I will keep y'all posted as to any success that might be achieved with or without my assistance. Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch .. http://www.AV-AT.com <http://www.av-at.com/>
Guest guest
My goodness, Butch - you called it right: Sarah is one gusty lady. Sometimes you follow your heart - she must have a very big heart. I'm in awe. Guess she learned how to handle the AK-47 on the fly, huh? She's in prayers Dede , " Butch Owen " <butchowen wrote: > > Howdy y'all, > > A little follow up on this thread .. Guest guest
Hi! I hardly ever post on here, but I have to on this. I Love Sarah Chayes! I first hear of her when she was interviewed on Democracy Now in 2006. You can still watch, listen to or read this interview: http://www.democracynow.org/2006/10/10/ sarah_chayes_on_life_in_afghanistan I really recommend it. After I heard it, I was so inspired, that I wrote to her, praising her for her efforts, and she wrote back! (after, like, a year! But to her credit, she finally did write back.) Can you imagine going to Harvard, having a coveted job, like reporting for NPR, and then giving it all up to go grass-roots in Afghanistan? She is a special being, indeed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Chayes And Sarah's own website, which includes a list of U.S. retailers of her coop's products. http://www.arghand.org/ Blessings, Sarah (Smith) On Jun 12, 2008, at 5:24 AM, wrote: > , " Butch Owen " <butchowen > wrote: > > > > Howdy y'all, > > > > A little follow up on this thread .. Guest guest
Sarah, after I read your post and clicked on the Wiki posting on Sarah Chayes, I looked for photos of her. She looks remarkably like the young Afghan woman that was on the cover of National Geographic a number of years ago - when they were fighting Russia. They had a special on the National Geographic channel a year or so ago where the photographer went back to Afghanistan and finally found her. Sarah's eyes are so very similar to the young woman's eyes! Dede , " St. Smith " <sarahkauai wrote: > > Hi! I hardly ever post on here, but I have to on this. > > I Love Sarah Chayes!
