Guest guest
Just some more info for the person who was going crazy with itching, A co-worker of mine just got back from a trip home to India. There they use Neem oil for pretty much everything (kind of like some use Tea Tree oil). I asked him to bring me back a bottle. Even after steroid cream, my hands are still itchy and raw. I put some Neem oil on my hands a few hours ago (warning, the stuff stinks worse than Tea Tree), and so far so good. The itching has stopped and the they haven't been drying out as rapidly as they usually do (which also causes itching). I have also been using shea butter and cocoa butter (separately) and it helps but the stuff is so hard to get out of the jars. The kind I found locally is pure but has the consistency of wax. I am thinking on scooping out a small bit in to a different jar and warming it in hot water. One last thing, gross alert, when my hands are itchy and dry, the skin tends to peel and flake a lot. Since I have never had the sense to leave things alone while they heal, I end up scratching and pulling at the skin until my fingers are even rawer. I bought an emery board that they use for acrylic nails (a coarser grit than normal ones) at the local drugstore and " file " the rough skin off of my fingers before putting on the creams/oils. Just don't use too much pressure, if you reach the bone, you are using too much. <GRIN> If you are interested in the Neem oil, they have some info on it at Wikipedia. It also works as an insect repellant / bio-pesticide so if I soak in it before gardening, I will get two benefits at once! Cynthia
Guest guest
Cynthia, thanks for this info. I was the one wanting to tear my skin off. I have neem oil, but haven't tried it for this. I will do so immediately. I also use pure shea butter - it seems to work best of anything I have tried. Yes, its hard coming out of the jar, but it softens easily on the skin. My biggest issue is finding WHAT it is that causes this. THEN I could deal with it rather than treat symptoms. Thanks again for the neem oil info. I'll let you know how it goes. Guest guest
YIKES!!! That image of the peeling and using the emery board has me wanting to hide my hands in sympathy. Neem oil really is a wonder oil. I use it on my dogs to help with repelling fleas (it's dog safe), and I find that when I put it into my shampoo my hair always comes out feeling moisturised without feeling too heavy. I find lavender helps with itching. And mango butter and olive oil both work for helping keep skin soft and not so raw. Just a few thoughts. =) Susanna On Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 6:25 AM, Cynthia Conn <cynconn wrote: > Just some more info for the person who was going crazy with itching, > > A co-worker of mine just got back from a trip home to India. Guest guest
My daughter had something that sounds VERY similar -- it was horrible, and she was either in pain or itching all the time. Anyway, she used an herbal remedy -- Thuja gotu kola -- got hers as a tincture from the Herb Pharm out here in Williams Oregon, but I am sure you can get it other places. Cost about $10, I think. This is a compound designed to deal with connective tissue problems, ie. skin is one! In her case, she just put it straight on her hands wherever they were irritated. It is recommended for arthritis, Lupus, MS, any sort of condition that affects skin, nerves, organs, etc. I take it orally for my lupus - tastes terrible, but you mix if I remember right, about 10 - 20 drops in something and drink it twice a day. It seems to make things heal very quickly, makes your nails grow, and your hair, too. I know, I probably sound like a nut case right about now, but I can tell you that it was a miracle cure for my daughter. Rubie - Cave Junction, OR Arabian horses, Maremma dogs, Boer goats and too many stray cats!

Guest guest
Hi Amber, I got mine from New Directions (Australia). I assume most of the other New Directions branches would also sell? Guest guest
Thank you for the sources. I have a bar of neem soap in my cupboard (I guess I bought it to use when I go camping). Besides an insect repellant, what else is neem used for? ~Amber ---- sraboni_muk 6/24/2008 6:11:19 PM Re: Itchy hands --- Hello, Neem is really a wonder herb, used frequently in India, kind of an all- purpose herb.
