Hi, I emialed a skin care company that uses eo's, butters, herbs,

water, oils stearic acid & xanthum gum in their products. They say

the waterless products use vitamin E to naturally preserve the product

by keeping the oils from goin g rancid. Regarding their lotions here

is their reply. I ask about this because this line of products is

coming to a local store so it doesn't seem to be made by a small

homecrafter so I'm wondering what people think of the " natural "

preservative system. Thanks, Susan

Lotions, on the other hand (or knee, or elbow), are made by

emulsifying (blending) oils and water. And because of their rich,

natural ingredients, they can become a perfect medium for nasty

bacteria or mold. To combat that, our natural preservative system is

an organic alcohol extract of skin healing and moisturizing herbs that

doubles as a delivery system for applying beneficial healing herbs to

the skin. It's the purest, simplest, cleanest, most toxin-free way we

know to preserve lotions. Beneficial to you, and naturally

preservative too!

Susan, alcohol at a concentration of more than 14% can be preserving

to a product. However, that amount of alcohol some people find drying

to the skin. You might want to ask them how much alcohol it is. I

doubt that the herbs are preserving - more than likely they are just

'food' for the bacteria.

15% ethanol, by weight, will preserve a product against bacteria and (I am

pretty sure, but would have to look it up) fungal growth. (That's

according to the cosmetic chemists who share their information on other

groups.)

We use it in our 'after shave splash "

Would you want to put 15% alcohol on your skin...esp if you are using a

cream or lotion for dry and/or sensitive skin?

I wouldn't...
