I have used tea tree oil diluted in olive oil for this purpose and it

worked fine. I had the vet treat it once and the stuff they used

caused my cat to continually itch and make the problem worse.

OK, thanks to all who replied! I have my source now and appreciate all

help! It's just been so long since I purchased any herbs that I didn't have

any sources bookmarked on this computer! I may try an alternative, too, as I

have tea tree oil on hand.

Is tea tree oil good for ear mites? Do you use it straight or diluted in a

carrier?

I read that tea tree oil mixed with olive oil might be effective. I honestly

don't recall if it was on this list or not. My bad! I did a lot of reading

and got several replies off-list as well.

I've read that used in the diluted form, if used for prolonged periods in humans

ears can cause deafness. It's good you are asking about it. Maybe you could

try it on a q-tip on the cat's ears. I don't know. Do more research and let me

know, I have cats too :)

HI, I was just reading the posts about ear mites in dogs.  My dogs has ear mites

in one of his ears and I went to walmart and bought the hartz ear mite stuff.

What is your opinion on the hartz stuff?  I'm new to the oils and don't know

much about it.  I wouldn't mind going natural.  The first time my dog got ear

mites I used a mixture of half peroxide and half warm water and the hartz.  It

worked after about a week and a half of cleaning his ear.  Any input would be

great.  Thanks, Genevive

When you use the solution of peroxide, rubbing alcohol, and eucalyptus do drop

it in his ear or wipe it in and do you need to wipe out the extra?  Genevive

Any heavy oil like baby oil or mineral oil will dround mites if left in the ear

for awhile ..but the mistake most people make is not putting it in both ears

regardless if the mites are in both ears .mites will crawl across the head from

ear to ear from cat to cat when sleeping together .

I started studying vet medicine 25 years ago when I revised I got charged 35.00

of a eye dropper bottle full of mineral oil for conjunctivitis in a dogs eyes

...by my vet

I put it in the ear rub the base of the ear not letting he animal shake its head

one ear at a time then clean it out with a q-tip ..do it as often as you can

until no black comes out or dirt ..if your animal has ear mites you can tell by

spreading the ear wax on a black piece of paper you can see the mites as little

white specks..

The rubbing alcohol dose a number on the mites and the peroxide cleans the ear

the eucalyptus cools the ear

It is only being used on cats and dogs and not for extended periods of time!

I wouldn't dream of using on a human without a great deal of research first!

Thanks for the heads-up, though.

Hi Jan,

Just got a chance to see you want to help your friends dog with

earmites. (??)

First, unless you know for sure it is earmites, all the natural

treatments using oil(minieral or other) in the world won't help.

After working in the veterinary field for 35 years to be honest with

you it is the very rare dog that has ear mites. That is a common

ailment of cats and rabbits and a few other little pocket pets.

Dogs can get them but like I said it is rare and typically not seen

in older pets (unless their immune system is compromised). Sometimes

we see it in litter's of young pups and usually only then if they are

in households that have cats!

More in likely the dog has a bacterial or yeast infection - which is

the more common ear infections to see in dogs.

Yeast infections is very often seen in the summer with high humidity

and warmer temps. Yeast infections then open the skin to develop

bacterial infections. Both, but especially yeast, are very itchy,

very smelly and bacterial are painful. The dog will shake it's head

and scratch at its' ear, even moaning at times when the infections

get out of hand.

Earmites produce a really dirty ear and when you clean them you will

see bloody/greasy debris. But the definitive way to check is have an

ear swab checked under a microscope. Some veterinarians will

sometimes let the owner bring in an ear swab (when finances are

tight) to see what is the problem. I'd check. At least once you

know for sure then you can know where to go.

I do agree that plain oil (olive or sweet Almond) would work IF it is

earmites, but NOT if it is a yeast or bacterial infection.

Please - if you can loan her a few dollars to have the ear swab

checked. It would be best for the dog if you really know what is

going on before you treat. There are natural treatments once you

know for sure, and they do vary depending on what is wrong.

In the best interest of the Dog,

Penny
