SHAWNEE MISSION MEDICAL CENTER USING ESSENTIAL OILS ================================================================================\ ======================== ================================================================================\ =================================================== SHAWNEE MISSION PATIENT CARE POLICY MEDICAL CENTER. ______________________________\ ________________________ Category: Patient Care Effective DRAFT No. PC227 Title: Aromatherapy Using Essential Oils Page: 1 of 3 ______________________________\ ____________________ Purpose: To provide guidelines for the use of aromatherapy as a complementary treatment for inpatients Definition: Aromatherapy complementary therapy utilizing essential oils to provide comfort and improve a sense of well being in a clinical setting. Research has been quantitative has centered around the use of aromatherapy for patients suffering from stress, anxiety . depression, and altered sleep patterns in order to produce a sense of well being. Essential Oils: essences extracted from plants using, distillation or expansion. Policy: 1. Aromatherapy with essential oils will be offered and may be provided for inpatients identified as wanting or being able to benefit from this complementary therapy. A. Aromatherapy will be administered in any of the following ways: I. Skin Absorption - essential oil is mixed with a carrier oil or cream of grapeseed. apricot, or sesame oil for massage 2. Inhalation essential oil is applied to a tissue or cotton ball for inhalation 3. Diffusion diffusion through use of a diffuser 4. Eye Pillow (hot or cold) with flaxseed and lavender flowers B. Nurses wishing to offer aromatherapy with essential oils to patients need to do the following: I. Discuss it with the patient to ensure they are a willing participant. and ask the following questions: a. Are you allergic to any fragrances? b. Do you have any skin allergies or sensitive skin? c. Are you pregnant? d. Do you have a lung condition? e. Do you have an epileptic condition? 2. Determine if there are any contraindications to the therapy (see below) .. 3. If patient is in a double room, ask the roommate for their permission to use and/or diffuse oils. 2. Indications: A. Aromatherapy will benefit patient seeking relief from: 1. Anxiety 2. Sleeping problems 3. Nausea 4. Pain 5. Stress 6. Depression B. Children younger than 5 (they can't be very sensitive to the oil ) with the exception of mandarin oil via diffusion. 3. Use near the eyes or mouth, as irritation of skin and membranes may occur 4. Patients with the following chronic illnesses or conditions should not receive unless cleared by a physician: a. lung conditions, e.g. asthma, respiratory allergies, or COPD- oils may cause airway spasms b. skin allergies or sensitivities- oils may cause skin irritation c. pregnancy - some oils such as juniper, rosemary, lavender (for first trimester). and sage , may cause uterine contractions d. epilepsy Ill. Selection of oils: A. To ensure products used are pure, only Young Living or Aura Cacia oils will be used. B. Oils are selected for their low risk level, and to address physical,emotional, and psychological conditions congruent with the experience of the patient. C. The following oils will be used by diffusion or inhalation based on the therapeutic action of each Essential Oil Therapeutic Action ______________________________\ ____________ Lavender analgesic, antidepressant, antispasmodic,sedative, calming,skin healing, anti-nausea ______________________________\ ____________ Sandal Wood antidepressant, sedative,antispasmodic,grief,stress and anti-nausea --\ ------------------------- Geranium relieves stress,sedative,uplifting, antidepressant,improve circulation analgesic, antispasmodic --\ ------------------------- Sweet Orange/ Mandarin sedative,antidepressant,uplifting,anti-nausea --\ ------------------------- Ginger analgesic,anti-nausea,antispasmodic,improve circulation relief from nervous exhaustion and tiredness, digestive conditions --\ ------------------------- Peppermint analgesic,anti-nausea,general stimulant (has been studied in the use of post-op nausea with fair effectiveness), and aids in voiding --\ ------------------------- Marjoram Analgesic , antispasmodic, anti-nausea, sedative, stress reliever, antidepressant --\ -------------------------- SHAWNEE MISSION MEDICAL CENTER Patient Care Policy ______________________________\ _____________________ Category: Patient Care Effective DRAFT No: PC 227 Title: Aromatherapy Using Essential Oils Page: 3 of 3 ______________________________\ _____________________ D. The following creams will be used for foot or hand massages: 1. Happy Blend contains Mandarin, Sweet orange, and Neroil essential oils mixed in a carrier crème base of Grapeseed, Apricot and Sesame Seed oils. 2. Relaxation & Anti-Stress Blend - contains Lavender, Patchouli, Ylang Ylang essential oils mixed in a carrier base crème of Grapeseed, Apricot and Sesame oils. 3. Energy Blend - contains Sweet Orange. Rosemary, and Peppermint essential oils mixed in a carrier base crème of Grapeseed, Apricot and Sesame oils. E. Discontinue use of any of these products if the patient experiences redness of the skin, discomfort or lightheadedness. IV. Training of Staff: A. In-house education of nursing will include use of the above oils and approved application. highlighting safety. B.
