They are predicting Hurricane Ike to go right through Sugar Land

(where I live). I'm SERIOUSLY considering packing up the kids and

heading to a friend's house in Alabama today .. but I'm not sure!

Hubby already said he'd stay and keep the cats with him. I need to get

a battery operated pump for the fish!

I'm a Yankee .. I'm not used to this hurricane country stuff :( 110

mph sustained winds sounds very scary though .. I heard one of the

county judges say " only evacuate if you're in danger of storm surge,

you have time to leave later if its a comfort issue and power is out " ,

but with winds like that I can only imagine how many downed

trees/power lines and flooded roads there will be.

Well, either way, I have LOTS of work to do in the yard today

(bringing in all the flower pots, shoring up that section of fence

that is falling down, etc ...)

*Sigh*

Living in South Florida, I completely understand what you're going through right

now.  If you live in a storm surge area I would head to higher ground.  If the

storm is a direct hit and you do evacuate you probably won't be allowed back in

for at least a week or so after the storm. My experience is it's the regular

folk who keep things running after a hurricane blows through.  Make sure hubby

has supplies, emergency personnel probably won't show up with aid for 3-4 days.

Bring back supplies when you're allowed back in.

I'm putting out the good vibes for you.  If you do evacuate and have a lap top

let us all know if you need anything.  A strong network is invaluable.

There is a list of zip codes where they say " Get Out! " If you can find that

list and your zip code is there, I'd Hike it!

Harris County Judge Ed Emmett called for mandatory evacuations of low-lying

areas starting at noon today. Those residents are in evacuation zones A and

B, specifically ZIP codes 77058, 77059, 77062, 77520, 77546, 77571, 77586

and 77598.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Selene,

We are going to hunker down and shelter in place. I'm making all kinds

of preparations right now including cleaning the yard. Got my last

minute grocery run out of the way(I think ;), have extra propane, etc ..

We're not worried about looters on this block .. I know for a fact

that not only us, but at least 3 of our neighbors who are staying as

well, are well armed ... ! ;)

Thank you ma'am. We're 77498. We just got the official call from the

city telling residents to " shelter in place " and know that city and

county services ARE indeed going to be available for us here in Ft

Bend County.

But yeah, those zip codes you mentioned below MUST leave!!!! This is

going to be one scary storm surge for them (they're thinking around

10' - 15' or so!)

If I can I'll be out playing in it...  Why?  Well I'm a crazy redneck,

and I'm sure my husband will be cursing me, and telling me " IF you die

because a pencil gets shoved in your heart due to the winds etc. I'm gonna

bring you back to life so I can kill you... " hehehehehehehe.

I love storms..  For the reals.  I'm jazzzed.

Jennifer.  It's usually not as bad as they make it out to be, but with

what happened with Katrina..  No one's gonna be that ignorant again..

And yes I know when to get out of the storm..  I also know that when I was

little and we got afraid of storms my mother would pull out the palms from

palm sunday and burn them..  I call it Catholic magic.  It works every

time.  I don't know why.. but it does.

Yup, my DH today bought bullets and beer today. As he was standing in

line with people with baskets of water, canned goods, batteries, etc.,

the cashier asked him, is this it? My DH said, yup, I got protection

and hurricane medicine, that's all I need. :)

OMG, I see that it has shifted a wee bit more towards your side of town!

Be safe my friend!

*Hugs*

Chris (ready to board up a few select windows .. as I have a LOT of

BIG windows in my house and need at least one " safe " room aside from

the tiny guest bathroom and the Harry Potter closet under the stairs

which the kids will sleep in tonight ;)

I know I'm coming in a bit late here, but if anyone needs a place to

stay for a bit I have a futon!

Or if anyone is passing through San Marcos and wants a take a rest,
