Guest guest
Hi, I just purchased some whole nutmeg and allspice. How do I grind them into powder? Take care, Tar

Guest guest
The nutmegs will be a little big for the coffee grinder unless you whack them with a hammer first :-). I love the coffee grinder for a lot of spices, and keep a separate one just for spices. Another for coffee, and another for resins and incense making ingredients (non-foods, I guess you could say). There are nutmeg graters on the market, or use the smallest screen on a cheese grater - that works too. Just grate off what you need and leave the nutmeg as whole as possible for next time. That works well for cinnamon sticks too. Guest guest
You can get a special grinder for the nutmeg; they're pretty cheap at most kitchen specialty shops. It looks like a tiny cheese grater. The allspice grinds down in a coffee grinder very easily, just be careful not to use coffee in it again, unless you want it tasting like allspice! Hope that helps, Rebecca www.sagelivingllc.com
Guest guest
Tar, I grind the allspice in a dedicated pepper grinder. I grate nutmeg on my microplane grater or on the smaller holes of my regular grater, or sometimes I just scratch a sharp knife across it depending upon how much I desire. Good cooking, Carol
