Guest guest
Hurray, another gardener! Just Google " Garden Seeds " , you will get a huge number of suppliers. Choose a company that is as close to your home as possible, or at least in a similar climate. It makes no sense to grow plants in Minnesota that were bred in Florida. Organically grown seed is a bonus, what's more important is to use a variety that will allow you to save your own seeds. Hybrids can give beautiful plants but they won't come true from seed. Look for words like " heritage variety " or " open pollinated " . Saving seeds from most annual crops is fun and easy. Beans, peas, corn, tomatoes are all good. You end up with plants that are adapted to your garden. Keep it SIMPLE. It is really easy to get carried away by catalogue lust. It happens to me every year. I went totally nuts with the Richters herb catalogue and there are still unopened packages in the box waiting for next year. (The garden is always perfect next year.) Start with crops that don't demand perfect conditions and give you lots of reward, like snow peas and snap beans. Those legumes get their nitrogen from the air and can do well even if your soil isn't that great yet. And they taste so much better fresh from the garden. Other beginner tips: Spinach is picky, Swiss Chard is much easier. The multi-coloured stems of " Rainbow Chard " are beautiful too. Head lettuce like Romaine can be a challenge, loose-leaf varieties are easier. Members of the cabbage family often disappoint, they really need good rich soil. Leafy kale on the other hand grows like mad no matter what. How big is your plot? Where are you? If you plan to grow garlic, NOW is the time to plant. Ien in the Kootenays, who planted garlic and top- dressed raspberries with old chicken manure today. http://freegreenliving.com
