Guest guest
Howdy y'all, Most folks know that we returned from Turkey in the summer of 2007 and settled on a little homestead a few miles south of Paris, TN. My essential oils store and warehouse is still located in Maryland - but not me. Considering that we have a heckuva lotta folks on this News Group .. odds are that some of them might be thinking of moving out of the big city one of these days. A week or so ago somebody on another News Group asked where would be the best place to retire in Tennessee .. and they asked about the economy in the area. I replied that the economy is not good anywhere now but there are places where the impact is not felt as much as in other places .. here is one of those places. I went on to say that if one is planning to retire or run their own natural products business from their home then they should consider Paris .. prices are low here and there is an abundance of low cost labor. If they want to work for someone else then they should head to Nashville or Memphis or Knoxville .. though I would not want to live in any of those cities. Magazines have previously rated Paris, TN (in Henry County) toward the top of the list .. now this link has us listed as Number 4 .. http://www.topretirements.com/Home.html Go there and click on http://www.topretirements.com/tips/Choosing_a_Community/100_Best_Retir ement_Towns.html or you can also check it out at http://www.topretirements.com/reviews/Tennessee/Paris.html If one wants to live close to the land .. get out of the city and buy an inexpensive homestead, raise their own food, hunt and fish, etc., then Paris is ideal. We live 7 miles south of town off of Highway 79 .. in Henry County. No air, water, or noise pollution. The cost of our 3,800 sq ft home and 2.5 acres of land was half what my buddy in Mt. Pleasant, SC paid for 1,200 sq ft on a 10,000 sq ft building lot .. and my annual property taxes are 75% less than his. Tennessee also has no state income tax. We have filled our pantry with over 600 jars .. plus filled two freezers with vegetables and fruits from our organic garden and orchard and are still eating red tomatoes, various peppers and lotsa cole crops. I have gone deer hunting but twice since the muzzle loading season opened last Saturday and I got a 4 point and a 7 point buck those two trips. We have more deer here than people and more wild turkey than deer. I'll also be adding to that freezer rabbit, duck, goose, wild turkey and quail. In my younger days, in my spare time I was a semi-pro bass angler .. chased Redman, Yamaha, BASS and such and have fished all over the South and Southeast .. so I can say with some authority that Kentucky and Barkley Lakes are the finest freshwater fishing I have seen .. the majority of the large bass tournaments and the National Crappie Tournament are held here each year. Paris, TN also is known for the World's Biggest Fish Fry each year .. and its known as the Catfish Capital of the South ... http://www.festivalusa.com/fishfry.htm or http://www.worldsbiggestfishfry.com/ If one can not fill their freezer from these lakes they need but a five minute lesson then all be go well. ;-) Kentucky Lake ... http://www.kentuckylake.com/ Barkley Lake ..... http://www.lakebarkley.org/ Land Between the Lakes .. http://www.lbl.org/ We have no ethnic or racial problems here .. the community is close knit. Being a retired Military Police Officer I can also speak with some authority when I say we have a city police force and county sheriff's department that are amongst the most professional I have ever seen. They are helpful and kind .. no storm trooper mentality .. and they work with the schools. Paris is not a place for Bad Guys to settle. The arrest record here is pretty impressive and folks do know how to protect their own homes on those rare occasions where it becomes necessary. As the economy worsens the more often I expect that it might become necessary. More on Paris http://www.city-data.com/city/Paris Tennessee.html .. and when you get down to crime rates .. look at the reduction since 2005 .. it is even lower for 2007 & 2008 .. our Sheriff, Monte Belew, is a dedicated professional and a nice guy who demands and receives the same level of performance from his deputies. The schools are great here too .. it is hard to find anyone who will disagree with me on this. If it sounds like I love it here its because I do. If it sounds like I am recruiting its because I am. ;-) Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch .. http://www.AV-AT.com
