Hi

I've 2 queries, hope someone out there knows the answers,

no. 1 do you need lye to make liquid soaps and body washes?

secondly, are there any shampoos available without SLS, ?

a friend whose husband makes shampoos told me that it is not

possible to make shampoo without SLS? any comments,

confused with all the contradictory information

thanks in advance

Hi J,

Although I'm not a soap or shampoo manufacturer we carry a product

that is Sulfate and PEG free. The manufacturer doesn't use any SLS

in this product. The product hardly lathers which is what the SLS

does- it makes lather.

We sell a lot to folks that are chemically sensitive to sulfates and

other chemicals.

So obviously, shampoo can be made without using SLS - but how? I

could tell you.

And not sure about your other question, but I'm sure there are others

that will have the answer.

Hi J,

To make any kind of " real soap " , whether it is liquid or solid bars,

you need lye. Liquid soap is made with a form of lye called Potassium

hydroxide (KOH). Bar soaps are made with a form of lye called Sodium

hydroxide (NaOH).

Each one creates different length molecular chains, and therefore

creates the harder or softer soap. In the case of liquid soap, the

soap is dissolved in water and diluted further to produce a liquid.

There are detergent alternatives to " soap " (sodium or potassium

saponified oils), and over the last decade or so more alternatives to

SLS have come out, including decyl glucoside, which before anyone

asks, yes I used to sell, but no longer carry (try Angie at The

Herbarie for it).

I have an SLS free botanically based body wash available now:
