OT: Belly Dancing

I love doing my tai Chi and Qigong. Now I've decided that I really want to

take up belly dancing as well. I'm thinking for that I can start with a

video and then take up a class eventually to improve the moves I already

know. It seems like a great full body workout, especially for those harder

to isolate middle of the body areas!

Does or has anyone here done belly dancing? Did you use a video (and have a

particular one you prefer), take a class, both ... ?

I know that Butch watched lots of belly dancing in Turkey! ;) LOL

Chris, I took belly dancing class a year ago. I really liked it and

should probably sign up for another. It just feels good to do it. I

have a couple tapes - it is always hard finding exercise videos

because they are never quite at my level, either too high or too

low, the same goes with belly dance videos. Here is what I have

though: Bellydance Fitness for Weight Loss, featuring Rania. I have

another I can't find right now, but it is by the 'twins'. If you are

looking at videos you will find several by this set of twins and I

can't think of their names, but they are ok videos. Neither of my

tapes I would say were fantastic, but both are ok! Check your

library too as I checked out a few.

I want to learn belly dancing, too! I keep looking at the schedules at my

local community center, but I'm never free all the nights they need for

the term.

Karen :)

Hi Chris,

Our local cable compay (Comcast) has a channel called " Fit TV " and

there's belly dancing on it like 2-4 times a day. The show is called

" Shimmy. " I've DVRed several of the shows and excersied to them later

when I had time. I really like it. They start very slow and break down

all the steps, then combine every thing at a faster pase to actually

do a full dance routine. The total workout is about 20 minutes and I

have to fast forward through commercials, which was great for me being

a beginner at it.

Good Luck!

Hi Chris,

I've been belly dancing for over 17 years, have been a member of 2

professional troupes and am now teaching belly dance classes of my

own. My recommendation would be to take a class, if there is a good

teacher in your area. There really is no substitute to being there in

person, being able to ask questions, etc.

Having said that, I think belly dance videos are great as a

complement, or if classes are not available in your area. I have a

couple of Veena and Neena - they are ok, but my favorite is Delilah:

Thanks for the input Cindy,

LOL, I guess belly dancing twins on videos is a big selling point ...

And yes, if you liked it, you deserve to treat yourself (and body) to

good things and get back to that belly dancing! :)

Hey Karen,

I hear ya about that " never free all the nights they need for the

term " issue. That's why my Tai Chi Chuan schedule works well for me.

One class per week with my Master. All the rest of the week is

independent practice and I have his DVD to fall back on if necessary

(speaking of which, I have to get moving doing my Qigong and TaiChi

for the morning! It is cool and cloudy outside .. yay!)

Ya know I hadn't thought to look into whether the local community

center has classes, thanks for the idea! :)

Oooh, Vanessa, too bad you didn't live near me!

Your recommendation about a class seems similar to my Tai Chi

experience. There is no substitute to having an expert teacher laying

the foundation and then adjusting your form as necessary, but videos

are good to use in between classes as a refresher on particulars of

the movements/forms.

So Veena and Neena are one of the famous twin sets, eh? LOL (for some

reason that makes me laugh .. the belly dancing twins and then legions

of knock of belly dancing twins LOL).

I will check out Delilah's videos as well as look into local classes! :)

Thanks! And post some pics/videos, you professional shimmying troupe

dancer, you!!!!!
