Hi Earth Mother,

The things I bought: the lotion came from _mikmaq-essence.com_

(http://mikmaq-essence.com) ... it's on the bottle. They have other

sweetgrass scented

products as well, but no essential oil. It is sooo yummy smelling. I love it!

The scent lasts all day too. The rendezvous where I bought it brings in

tribal members from all over the U.S. and some from Canada and South America as

well. The woman was Canadian who made this, I think, or her ancestry is,

not sure.

The soap I found was made here in Connecticut, but is not listed on their

site. A nearby orchard store started carrying a lot of their soaps, and I

snapped up all the bars of Sweetgrass. It smells just as good as the lotion,

but

the scent doesn't last as long by itself, not surprising, since of course I

rinse the soap off! Their site is _www.sleepymoonsoaps.com_

(http://www.sleepymoonsoaps.com) . They give classes and stuff too, if anyone

wants to see

the mountain area in NW CT. I'm in the SE.

I have no problem finding the dried braids of Sweetgrass or buying them.

Fresh might be harder. I live near Connecticut's two Indian Casinos, Foxwoods

and the Mohegan Sun, and they have regular rendezvous/pow-wows. There are

many shops around that carry it as well. But I really would rather have the

oil, as I have allergy problems from smudging, especially in winter when the

house is closed up. Oil in the aromatherapy diffuser won't bother me.

Metaphysical/New Age bookstores usually stock the grass for smudging as well.

I'm sending a recipe for Sweetgrass Oil that I found in a separate post.

I'm not sure if that qualifies as an essential oil though, as I don't know what

defines it, exactly.

What tribe is your husband from? I am a small part Narragansett (Rhode

Island tribe) on my biological father's side, but didn't know that until I met

him when in my thirties. It explained why I love all things Indian though!

I will have to check into that Yucca plant!

I have learned enough to know to avoid " fragrance " oils. I'm generally

allergic to them, which makes it easy to tell the difference!

Your combination soap idea sounds great! Go for it! :)

I'm off to bed now, and thanks for responding. It was a general question

for everyone really, so I did ask YOU too! Goodnight... sweet dreams!

I am not the one you asked but I have been told there is no true eo of

sweetgrass. There are some dupes....my husband is indian and we do use many

blends

of things for certain things. That said, I've seen some say they do have an

authentic oil of sweet grass but that is a divided opinion. I would LOVE to

have that. I make soaps for special purposes for specific people.

The plant itself is in some of my things. I am now allowed however to sell a

sacred herb to anyone. I've purchased a sg oil, was very disappointed. The

plant itself is in some of my things. I am now allowed however to

I know the native peoples I live amongst would not like me to commercially

sell what is sacred to them. It's my opinion however, as long as I don't do

ceremony using their traditional sacred plants, all plants are for ALL people

and four leggeds, wing relations and water relations.

Years ago there was a product that was called Yucca dew or Yucca do and the

plant is Sacred to the Navajo and upset many elders and it was petitioned and

finally not sold any more. Pity, its a very healing plant. I like it much

better than aloe anyday. It does not mean I don't use it. It is also a great

infammatory by mouth and on the body.

Google a search and see what you come up with. I know of many 'uncut

essential FRAGRANCE oils' I found amusing. To come up with that true note of

sweetgrass, you might be able to use tonka, sweetgrass, and hay in a tincture,

not

sure or heliotrope, it too has a vanillin aspect of it. One of these days I'll

give the helio a try...

If you find any holler at me!

I do make a purifying soap , I don't sell to the general public. I would

like to make the authentic blend of sweetgrass, sage, cedar , kinikinik(sp)

tobacco.

I'm fixing to do an indian perfume soap. Sure glad I picked these when they

were still fresh and in bloom!

I would think some of the more balsam scents in combination with other oils

would also work.

There is no Eo of sweetgrass, what is out there smelling like it are

fragrance oils that contain coumarin, coumarin is what gives sweet

grass, sweet white clover and sweet woodruff that certain 'special'

vanilla type of scent. Sweetgrass is dying out in the wild more and

more, although it will relocate if one knows how to transplant it and

when. Please, never buy bundles or braids that still have roots on them.

In order for sweet grass to come back every year it needs to be cut with

a knife or scissors. Some soapers use the water from 'curing' the

sweetgrass, but that by itself does not hold it's scent very long, it

will need a fixative.

Holy cedar oil is still made by a handful of Ojibwe, it's infused, not

steam distilled. The process takes over a month of fiddling with it.

Once you have smelled the real sacred cedar oil you immediately will

know the difference from it's cousins, the steam distilled kind that is

sold at Powwows.

Sacred cedar will never be sold or the process of how to make it will be

published.

Hi CMaria,

Would those fragrance oils be made using something like the recipe I posted

earlier? Is that an infusion? I'm still somewhat new to this, and am unsure

what the difference is between an essential oil and an oil infusion. That

contained oil, not water, and listed one as a fixative. I don't want it for

soap, but for aromatherapy in my diffuser. There's nothing in those that would

trigger my allergies, which is my major concern with them.

I've never even seen bundles or braids with roots attached! I did note that

seeds for Sweetgrass are available out there, so I'm sure one could grow it

if in the right climate, or maybe could go to _www.nature.org_

(http://www.nature.org) and petition the Nature Conservancy to take it on as a

conservation

project. They do a lot of work establishing new environments for endangered

species, such as growing fields of Blue Lupines to re-establish the lovely

little bright blue Karner butterflies. Perhaps if they find Sweetgrass, or

something that needs it for survival, to be endangered, they would love to take

that on!

I'm personally of the mindset that if a thing is truly sacred, it will go

where *Spirit* wishes it to go, and attempting to keep something only to

oneself is unlikely to either work or be rewarded, but maybe that's just me.

Whether I call the Great Spirit Sophia for my Gnostic self, or Cautantowitt for

my

Narragansett self matters not. Only Spirit determines where the wind blows,

and who has the right to use what, imo.

And I am up too early this morning, pondering the meaning of waking at 5:55!

I dreamed I was dying my hair reddish blonde, watching actress Swoozie

Kurtz, and how her hair looked with the gray peeking out. LOL! My actual hair

is long silver gray. But my puppy Lily's is reddish blonde, and I commented

yesterday that I wished mine was like hers, so I guess that became the dream.

Now Lily has heard me typing so I must go and get her out of her bed and

tend her needs! I'll be back!
