Guest guest
Well, went to the quack today. " Thing " in my head was right AGAIN. I have high blood pressure AND type 2 diabetes. Anything a surprise? Nope, been doing my blood pressure in the stores, pretty accurate they are, surprised about that. Been testing my blood sugar for a week, because " thing " in my head said to. Went to the quack and asked for a prescription for testing strips. Those things are expensive, about a buck a pop. She asked about the readings I was getting, told her and, " you're diabetic " . Scheduled for blood tests on Monday, wheee. Got the lecture... eat right, stop smoking and lose weight. Oh and they said " Happy New Year " . Had to laugh. Oh and no. Not depressed. Already knew it going in, so nothing to get depressed for. Now for the hard part. ICK. AFTER I enjoy this week end to the FULLEST. Numbers aren't so bad I have to really worry about it, just DO something about it. Lovely. Oh, and I hate sticking myself. I always have to grit my teeth and the WORST part of it is, because I'm a coward I have to do it twice or three times. I'm a freaking pincushion and my hand feels bruised. >sigh< Anywho Happy New Year! K
Guest guest
Kathleen, If the numbers are to bad diet and exercise can help lots. Also, try and destress your life. We will all be your cheerleaders. Thing is if you do something about it now, it makes it much better later. On another list someone posted a aid for stopping to smoke. If you want it let me know and I will send it to you private. Happy New You New Year! Sandi

Guest guest
Kathleen, here's the good news......I lost weight when they put me on metformin for my diabetes. Sure did. Cut out every thing white, I did eat complex carbs...you have to have carbs just not the simple carbs.....you will be surprised......and if you get that under control (you might have been insulin resistant before this) your bp might go down too. I no longer have to take bp meds.........WAHOOOOOOOOOOOOO. that I am happy about, two less meds.....and then take Co Q 10. I love that supplement, hawthorne berry and cayenne, they have a 'cool' cayenne, some essential fatty acids, that helps with cholesterol and a good multi with high be complex and in no time you'll be perking right along! I like the womens formula at GNC. You can get those with or without iron, without iodine if you can't take iodine so they have one for pretty much any woman . I've taken em for years and they do dissolve......I tried it in water. A lot of those semi truth stuff about pills not breaking down, they failed to say it was because the people were taking some sort of presciption acid reflux med....we is in my ball park now.......dang I miss working! If you are diabetic, you are at a much higher risk of yeast.....so acidophilus if you don't like yogurt. I love it , thats how I eat my cereal, yogurt, no milk. evie
Guest guest
Hey Evie Thanks for your kind note. This is a new path for me so don't know how difficult it's going to be. The doctor mention metformin specifically, but hopefully my numbers won't be high enough to require it. My brother was diagnosed type 2 ten years ago... he lost some weight and the diabetes went bye-bye. (Although my doctor said that once you have it, you are a diabetic for life. Much like an alcoholic. In other words, I'll always have to be aware of weight, sugar etc.) So I'm hoping for the same thing. I'm supposed to take my blood pressure tablets starting tonight but I'm afraid I'm waffeling. Do I really want to get started on this one? I should and I know that, but I also have qualms... We shall see if I play it smart or stupid. Well, off to poke myself and draw blood (oh happy days!) Guest guest
Dear Kathleen, Diabetes is nothing to be complacent about, so you might want to start by getting those sugar levels down fast by drastic allopathic means. But you don't have to stop there and resign yourself to staying on oral medications. Work with your " regular " doctor, but observe yourself sharply and do everything in your power to get off the damn stuff ASAP. Persistent debilitating diarrhea can be a side effect of Medformin in particular. That stuff almost killed my mother and my co-grandfather. (the other one, not my husband) On the other hand I also know some people it works fine for. You never know. Dr. Julian Whittaker recommends going straight to Insulin if you cannot solve the problem by diet and exercise alone. He is really down on the oral meds. The most important thing to " take " for a type 2 diabetic is a daily walk. Exercise helps your cells to be more receptive to the insulin that your body still creates. I should take my own good advice, . I feel so much better when I get around to doing that, and I notice my hypoglycemia is way better. Like Selkie said, good whole foods and probiotics are a must. Digestive enzymes are helpful as well to help you get as much nutrition out of your food as possible and to support your pancreas. You are what you absorb, not what you eat. There are many herbs, foods and supplements that have a regulating effect on the pancreas. Nopalitos and bitter melon (Momordica Charantia) are foods that come to mind. The FDA came down like a ton of bricks on a nice small company marketing a tea based on Momordica. It worked a bit too well and they were not subtle enough about it. Diabetes medicine is big business and we all know who has the ear of the FDA. Don't you live in the Artichoke belt not too far from Watsonville? ( My one California trip was to Aptos) They are good too. For more information on which foods are helpful for each health condition, there is George Mateljan. Great website on what to cook, why, and how. http://whfoods.org Vanadium and Chromium are trace minerals that help, but it is easy to mess up with those trace minerals. Get them in the form of high-mineral foods, like seaweed or other wild algae, and use a good live salt, like Celtic seasalt or Himalayan rock salt. Google the following herbs, just for starters: Cinnamon Conjac mannan Gymnema Sylvestre Pata de Vaca Pedra Hume Caa The last 2 are from Brazil. Locally they are called " vegetable Insulin " . Read, read, read. One of my favorite newsletters is Dr. Jon Barron. He wrote an excellent primer on natural health called " Lessons from the Miracle Doctors " that is free for the download in Ebook form. Here is an article by him on Diabetes. http://www.jonbarron.org/diabetes-program/01-29-2007.php And that's all she wrote for now. Happy New Year everyone! Guest guest
what are your diastolic and systolic numbers running in bp????? if they are way high, I would think you risk stroke or heart attack.....that said, mine went down when i had to take a diuretic........but metformin can be taken in large amounts and I'm on minimal dose and get off of it some times for a while.....so I'm okay with that. its not that scary. i dropped 17 lbs in a little over a month on metformin and 10 more by stopping my daily bottle of coke . Regular size......think about it....... e
Guest guest
Hey Ien Thanks for all the good information. Lately I've become an expert on type2. Complacent? Not exactly. Upset? Nope. Now if it was/is type 1 THEN I'll go nuts. But it's not, my numbers are too low for that. My highest number thus far has been a 174 (which DID freak me out a bit), but mostly tend to linger around 135-154. I'll be donating blood on monday and find out a week later the good or bad news. Personally I suspect I won't need medication and if offered probably won't take it. I'll give the diet and exercize a go before admiting defeat. I'm BAD with medications. Always forget them. Shoot, I cant even remember to put on moisteriser or body lotions. Now I've got this dumb pill for high blood pressure. The only reason I have remembered that one so far is because it sits next to my bed and I see it every night... and fortunately that's when I'm s'posed to take it. The only inconvienence this stupid diabetes stuff has been THUS far is the fact that my hands look like I've been cuddeling a porky-pine. getting tired of poking myself. The worst part is, I only had one lancet which I used for a week... been extra painful the last couple of days. Too lazy to go out and get some more... did tonight though. what a difference a new lancet makes! LOL! And yes, I know about the sterile factor. I ignore it because I'm the only one who touches it and durned if I'm going to use a new one every time I poke myself... too expensive for that nonsense. As for changing my diet... I haven't. but I will... come monday when I get the kids off to school, donate the blood etc. Any who, thanks for the note, I'm book marking all the good stuff that comes my way. Guest guest
I am so glad to hear you will try diet and exercise first! It really isn't rocket science. I am taking this herbal course by Susun Weed, my favorite herbalist, even though she doesn't like the bluegreen algae that I swear by. Susun says it is really quite easy these days to become an expert on your own disease, what with the blessed internet and all. After all, a doctor has to learn about a gazillion diseases, and you only have to know about ONE! You just have to get used to paying attention to yourself. Keep us posted, carry on! Guest guest
kay you are sooooooooooooo me! I cant afford the strips.....you can get a super duper glucometer for free on some sites but the strips?????? HOLY JOE........84.00????? thats considered OTC by a lot of insurance companies too and they won't cover that....some will. i'm not going to bug you about the blood sugar because I think you bp needs to be checked regularly and they don't call high blood pressure the 'silent killer' for nothing......trust me.....I know.... that was a disturbing number......and no one says you have to do this life long if diet and excercise will fix it.......but you cannot let this go unattended......now I lost a daughter to some unknown bacterial infection that developed into ARDS.....you don't want infection to sneak in and then make itself known when its dang near too late. Bp....if you have a machine or a friend does......for a straight 7 days you should take your bp 3-4 times, two in the day, two at nite and see where your pattern is..........I can look at my husband and see his, but he blew it off until he lost vision in his left eye and here is what you are doing.......every time that bp is high, its taxing your body......his created an occluded vein in his eye and he could lost his vision entirely and stroked out.....stress on ALL ORGANS.......its nothing to play with. Guest guest
Hey Evie I'm taking the blood pressure medication... I weighed my options and choices and decided that FOR NOW I'll take the medication. My strips, lancets are covered by insurance so I'm lucky there. But it's cheaper to buy the ;ancets WITHOUT the perscription. Go figure. The strips, I got 150 for 20 bucks, so I'm happy about that. I'm STILL not changing my lancets every time... I'll change them every few days and call it quits. As for the rest... Monday is my bloods. Until then, I'm going to eat what I want. After that, I'll behave myself until this resolves itself. I'm STILL not convinced about the diabetes, but I'll be good until I get the definitive word. I'm stupid/stubborn that way. ;-) I can check my bp at the grocery stores, surprisingly, they were accurate. My mother told me, that you can pop into a firestation anytime and they'll be happy to check your bp free of charge... been too chicken to check and see if that one is true. Part of the reality is that I've never had a serious illness before and I'm having a hard time believing it now. Especially, when, as you say, they're " silent " . I'm so sorry about your Daughter and Husband. That's a really rotten thing to have happened. No worries about me " mommy " ;-), I'm stubborn and stupid but when faced with reality, I eventually behave myself.
