Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, Been a type 2 diabetic for 6 years so I can relate. About the blood tests, most of the new meters out now have a second cap that can be used to test on the forearm which is pretty painless. If testing for LOW blood sugar, always test the fingers, blood gets there faster and the reading will be more real-time. Look for the meter with the smallest blood sample, I use a Freedom. If the sticker (lancet) hurts, you may have it set too high, start at 1 and see if you get enough blood. Wash and dry your hands before using but DON'T use the alcohol pads on your fingers, it toughens up the fingertips and you have to stick harder to get blood (guitarists use alcohol to toughen up their fingertips for the strings). Lotion or oils on the hands can affect the reading. I change my lancet once a week or whenever it hurts (sometimes you get a bad one). No finger infections yet. I kept sticking myself when trying to change it and that hurt worse than the test. Look for articles about glycemic index, this is how fast a certain food item will increase your blood sugar. This can help in regulating it. I unfortunately have the tri-fecta - high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes with severe insulin resistance. The blood pressure and cholesterol are well controlled. The diabetes still freaks out once in a while (like now). And oh joy, the blood sugar can also vary with the time of the month. If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me. Cynthia
Guest guest
it is a racket. I worked in a pharmacy and a 1000 count generic lasix cost us at that time about 2 bucks......first script written paid for that script and several more just by co--pay alone.....then there are the docs that get kick backs on writing for drugs..x amount per patient , was done here with the drug geodon. the high end items, the pharmacy does not make money...it costs them often what it costs you so they recoop that money on meds that should only be a penny a pill......so the cheaper the product, the higher the profit margin.........its why lortabs and pain meds are high too. e --- On Sun, 1/4/09, Leo Durocher <sounder8834 wrote: Leo Durocher <sounder8834 Re: Crap! Life USED to be fun/Ot Saturday, January 3, 2009, 5:00 PM kay you are sooooooooooooo me! I cant afford the strips.....you can get a super duper glucometer for free on some sites but the strips?????? HOLY JOE........84. 00????? thats considered OTC by a lot of insurance companies too and they won't cover that....some will. i'm not going to bug you about the blood sugar because I think you bp needs to be checked regularly and they don't call high blood pressure the 'silent killer' for nothing..... .trust me.....I know.... that was a disturbing number...... and no one says you have to do this life long if diet and excercise will fix it.......but you cannot let this go unattended.. ....now I lost a daughter to some unknown bacterial infection that developed into ARDS.....you don't want infection to sneak in and then make itself known when its dang near too late. Bp....if you have a machine or a friend does......for a straight 7 days you should take your bp 3-4 times, two in the day, two at nite and see where your pattern is.......... I can look at my husband and see his, but he blew it off until he lost vision in his left eye and here is what you are doing....... every time that bp is high, its taxing your body......his created an occluded vein in his eye and he could lost his vision entirely and stroked out.....stress on ALL ORGANS...... .its nothing to play with. But when its high its definatetly harming something, you just don't know what it is yet. e.......call me mommy --- On Sat, 1/3/09, Kathleen Petrides <Beadhussy (AT) gmail (DOT) com> wrote: Kathleen Petrides <Beadhussy (AT) gmail (DOT) com> Re: [oils_herbs_ etc] Crap! Life USED to be fun/Ot Saturday, January 3, 2009, 6:14 AM Hey Ien Thanks for all the good information. Lately I've become an expert on type2. Complacent? Not exactly. Upset? Nope. Now if it was/is type 1 THEN I'll go nuts. But it's not, my numbers are too low for that. My highest number thus far has been a 174 (which DID freak me out a bit), but mostly tend to linger around 135-154. I'll be donating blood on monday and find out a week later the good or bad news. Personally I suspect I won't need medication and if offered probably won't take it. I'll give the diet and exercize a go before admiting defeat. I'm BAD with medications. Always forget them. Shoot, I cant even remember to put on moisteriser or body lotions. Now I've got this dumb pill for high blood pressure. The only reason I have remembered that one so far is because it sits next to my bed and I see it every night... and fortunately that's when I'm s'posed to take it. The only inconvienence this stupid diabetes stuff has been THUS far is the fact that my hands look like I've been cuddeling a porky-pine. getting tired of poking myself. The worst part is, I only had one lancet which I used for a week... been extra painful the last couple of days. Too lazy to go out and get some more... did tonight though. what a difference a new lancet makes! LOL! And yes, I know about the sterile factor. I ignore it because I'm the only one who touches it and durned if I'm going to use a new one every time I poke myself... too expensive for that nonsense. As for changing my diet... I haven't. but I will... come monday when I get the kids off to school, donate the blood etc. Any who, thanks for the note, I'm book marking all the good stuff that comes my way. Guest guest
Kathleen, I can empathize with you! I went to the doctor last June and he said I have elevated blood sugar (at that time it was around 140). He said the same thing..quit smoking, change diet and exercise. Well, I've done two out of the 3. Hubby also smokes and can't take Chantex and I don't want to. So later on this year we will quit together. Lord help us and anyone around us when we do though. I digress. My doctor hasn't put diabetes on my chart yet, as I have gotten my weight down by 26 pounds and my blood HgA1C is now 102. He says to continue on with what I am doing and it will get even lower. Only problem is, I was swimming a lot this summer, then Ike hit and I was busy with the house and business.then I developed something on my left shin that I thought was an infected ingrown hair or an infected bite and wouldn't heal, so went back to the doctor and he sent me to a dermatologist.turned out to be a sqamous skin cell carcinoma. Had it removed. It is healing, but slowly. Coarse this was only a month ago, so it will take time. Wanted to join the YMCA, or 24 Hour Fitness, to get back to swimming during the winter, but that will have to wait. So now am just walking every morning, or at least trying to every morning. What I was going to say to, was the doctor told me to put Vaseline on the site to keep it soft, so no scab would form. Told him I had something better. Made a salve out of: emu oil, shea butter, rose hip seed oil, beeswax (local)a drop of my precious rose otto, and a little frankincense. The area around the wound isn't as red as it was a few days ago. Have to go back to him next week, so will show him how well it has improved!! Oh, and went online and bought a bottle of cinnamon capsules when I was told about the BS. Not the kind they sell in the grocery or health food stores. That is cassia. This is the true cinnamon. It seems to have helped lower the BS as well. Hope this information helps or gives you a feeling that you are not alone. Regards, And hope your New Year is one of better health, Anita
