Guest guest
Hi All, I was just asked by someone if there was a good EO that can be sprayed on the bedding to help prevent Bed bugs from biting them. To Explain, they are going on a Cruise and have heard nightmares that ships are infested with Bed Bugs and they don't want to bring any home nor do they want to get bit while on vacation. I read one suggestion on another website that says to spray Lavender EO mixed with water on the bedding. They also asked if a regular insect repellent might work - one made with EO's of course. Since I have no experience with Bed Bugs (except once at a hotel a few years back - 2 sleepless nights) And I didn't have any EO's with me to experiment - (Like I really wanted to - more like - I just wanted to go home but it was not an option). Anyway any help or suggestions that any of you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I know this couple would like to have a great cruise instead of worrying about bed bugs! Guest guest
If I laid out $$$ for a fancy cruise, I would be reporting bugs to the Stewards, to any management I could find. They do NOT want this sort of troubles. If it happens they will be bending backwards to offer compensation. Gayla Roberts
Guest guest
This is not EO, but I've heard the spraying the mattress with WD-40 will kill them. I seem to have heard this somewheres this is happening in otherwise highly rated hotels, too.....And for some time.... They were once almost wiped out by the use of broad spectrum insecticides.... Today the trend is to use focused insecticides, and for a long time bedbugs weren't focused on....<G>.... The little buggers (literally) can take up residence in all kinds of places, so there's a potential for them to show up any place there's lots of travelers.....Like hotels and cruise ships...<G>.... They are insects (6 legs) rather than arachnids (8 legs), like ticks.... Fleas are insects too... The good thing about them, if ya can actually say that, is they aren't usually the transmitters of disease, like ticks often are... But they do bite and make life miserable for someone encountering them....... To rid a place of them...usually have to fumigate.... Lavender or lavandin would be be my suggestion also, for a spray...How much good that will do, can't say...They can hang out almost anywhere they find cover... Catnip EO is supposed to be a great repellent, but it doesn't smell as nice... I believe you can even get bedbug ratings for hotels on the web....but I doubt if for cruise ships... Maybe they ought to contact the cruise ship with their concerns... -- Gary W. Bourbonais L'Hermite Aromatique A.J.P. (GIA)
Guest guest
I have an acquaintance who is an exterminator. This is in Wisconsin. Currently the close the house or apartment up tight and heat the entire area to a temperature of 150 degrees for 8 hours. They guarantee their work but not necessarily an 1 trip event. If some one comes up with a formulae that works I would be interested. -- Thank you so much for your time, Janet Hogan www.CandleCocoon.com Our elite line of candle fragrance oils and Flutter Dyes are sought after by those with discriminating taste and the desire to create customer loyalty. Guest guest
Gayla, To my knowledge bed bugs can be a problem anywhere and cruise ships are not exempt. Our exposure to them was in a Highend Internationally known Hotel chain. I reported it to the front desk at check out and also reported it to the State's department of health that forwarded it onto the folks that deal with bed bugs. Yes we got our money back and several letters from the Corporate office of the Hotel Chain and the local one too. We haven't been back to that particular hotel since. But we have stayed at others in their 'chain' of hotels. In any case, it was gross. Guest guest
Hi Gary, I agree I think using Lavender or Lavendin will be her best bet to at least keep them away. Catnip is way to stinky in my opinion, although it might work. Don't think I know of anyway to experiment so won't even try. Thanks for the input. Guest guest
What about one of those lights that is supposed to disinfect? I don't really know if it works or not, but we have one that we use on our beds, at our camper, and the dog bed. http://www.verilux.com/uvc-allergy-relief/counters-bedding Jan G in MI On Feb 24, 2009, at 1:53 PM, Gary Bourbonais wrote: > Gayla Roberts wrote: > > If I laid out $$$ for a fancy cruise, I would be reporting bugs to > the > > Stewards, to any management I could find. Guest guest
What about dusting beneath the sheets with boric acid? Doesn't that kill them eventually? Gayla Roberts
Guest guest
Penny Wednesday, February 25, 2009 12:14 AM Bed Bugs how to repel them - Any suggestions? Hi All, I was just asked by someone if there was a good EO that can be sprayed on the bedding to help prevent Bed bugs from biting them. ============================================================== Hi Penny, List, I once lived in a backpacker hostel in the UK that had a major bed bug problem. Eventually the owner was forced to move all guests to another hostel for a few nights whilst our hostel was fumigated. I can't see how that would have helped much as the bugs were probably in everyone's bags etc by that point anyway... but I digress. Before the bugs were 'dealt with' I was bitten a number to times, lovely big red itchy welts, however found a few things did help to deter them [these are my experiences only]. 1. Lavender oil definitely helped me keep them at bay [along with helping with actual bites]. A bed spray would be good, or even the eo appropriately diluted in a body cream to wear to bed of a night. I'm sure there might be other oils that would work also. I'd say Tea Tree, as someone suggested, would work too, however I'm not sure I'd like the smell lingering in my bed! ) 2. I found the bugs really like biting body joints [ankles and knees....] and found wearing socks and tucking my pj bottoms into them helped too. Also, similar to mosquitoes, we found that the bedbugs " liked " some people more so than others. One lass was covered in bites, even on her face - poor love! Others weren't touched at all. Hmmm, talking of bed bugs is making me itchy! Kind regards Holly PS - one more thought - not sure if this would help or not - perhaps they could ask the cleaning staff to regularly and thoroughly vacuum all sides of the mattress? Guest guest
Hello Everyone, Thanks for all the replys. It made my day. I loved reading all the comments. BUT before I forget I have to apologize for the graphic descriptions of those little " buggers " . But just wanted everyone to realize they were not dute mites - which I have seen under a microscope and they (dust mites) are scarey looking. Now on to Purple Betty. Ooooooweee! How in the world did you manage it. It would have been many sleepless nights for me. With all the suggestions I have seen, I think that Lavender as a linen spray will most likely be the best thing to try. At least it smells good and will help them sleep. I agree - Lavender and/ or Tea Tree (both diluted) on the bites but not on the bedding. I don't care for the smell of Tea Tree along with many other folks that don't care for the smell either and I certainly don't want to smell it all night long. I also agree that they prefer certain people - As I was bitten and my hubby not and we were in the same bed both nights with the bugs (gross again). Strange though - mosquitos leave me alone and bug my husband - go figure! Anyway, off to another busy day, but again I thank everyone for their suggestions. Penny Your One Stop Aromatherapy Shop! Guest guest
Penny, Unfortunately bed bugs are a growing problem in the US. My son's apartment building is infested with them. His landlord called on exterminating company few times already but stubbornly bed bugs still appear every summer. I found this website http://www.bed-bug.net/ and purchased spray and powder from them. Last summer after using these products my son's apartment stays clean of bugs. He is going to repeat this treatment in the spring and hopefully this will keep bugs away for the summer. The fossil powder prevents them from entering from outside. Forget about the essential oils - they don't work for this problem. Jenya
