Guest guest
Hi All~ Ive started to blend in soaps with essential oils and was wondering if anyone has any " safety numbers " on specific essential oils.....I do have martin watts basic oil safety file and looked for an example on :peppermint...but there really wasnt anything on it as it says there has been no testings on it......And some soapers just go on the 0.5-1oz of eo or fo in the soap per pound, But of course with something like tea tree, that would be too high.......Any thoughts on where I could find more info on it for soap use? Thanks Caterina
Guest guest
I use peppermint at about 1% in cp soap. To much more than that and it tingles to much for me. I think other places like zum use way more. I can't even use it. Guest guest
on some eo's a full oz could be a serious problem. That can interfere with meds if one likes to soak in a tub and mint , especially peppermint can be extremely irritating. I was burned in my lower back from a salt I was given that had too much mint....so I tend to pull back on eo's if they have a ratio stated. But I never go by the FO suggestions. Some Fo's also need to be watched. I have several that recommend you not use more than .5-.7. Generally your nose can tell ya . Just depends on the eo. Citrus you need to be careful with , eucalyptus, thyme, anything camphorous. Unless you are good at blending your eo blend and know for certain what you're doing, buy the preblended and go by their recommendations...you'll find that often you'll need to pull back on many of those despite the max recommended. Oils like oakmoss or a good jasmine you wont need much and I doubt I'd use an expensive floral in cp. I would in milled, glycerin bars and liquids.... I take a 30 ml glass and use a 1 ml pipette. Today I did a blend of eucalyptus, lime, rosemary/mint, juniper and white sage and then topped it off with a ml of lime again....nice bar.....but going by one ml and I think I was at just under 15 mls I then used my nose and had some left over....tried it tonite and man....its a nice blend. In fact it smells like a known fo but mine is eo LOL..... Since I was using strong eo's I used a light hand. I scented glycerin in this case so (I'm as jethro says 'cipherin'..) that gave me 6 5.5 ounce bars and some left in the cup which will be used to diffuse . I did not get to 15 mls. i just used it, its nice, mild, fresh and I think I'll make this one unisex LOL...scent is plenty strong too. I also have an oakmoss and rose drying on my rack I was able to use more of. Boy I can't wait to use that one! That I pushed up on the amount. As it dries it's getting softer so should do well once its 'hard'. Also, research your eo's and the cautions. thats how I learned years ago to remember herbs and oils...which ones were not wise for some people. evie

Guest guest
--->Thanks Margaret:) I was thinking of trying it a around there as well or a little less maybe than 1% as I hate that tingling feeling as well! Its better to do less with an eo like that than more and have to dump the whole batch.... miss ya! Guest guest
Ah good point Margaret and I failed to mention the differences in soap.....so sorry for any confusion members.....I was for some reason stuck in rebatch and MP (gee, wonder why? duh). Totally forgot about the lye process and the would make a difference. That said I've had the pleasure and privilege to obtain Mohea soap which made my 'technique' right where I needed it to be. Any one who can do a 50% shea soap is big time in my book. Hardest bar I ever had, longest lasting and the most moisturizing. I also know the oils she uses and they are second to none. Good to see you post Margaret. Long time no see. Hope you find more orphans accidently LOL! evie --- On Fri, 5/29/09, Mohea Natural Beauty <mohea wrote: > Mohea Natural Beauty <mohea > Re: Essential oils & Soap > " oils herbs etc " > Friday, May 29, 2009, 11:04 PM > I use peppermint at about 1% in cp > soap.
