Guest guest
Howdy Caterina, > Ive started to blend in soaps with essential oils and was wondering if > anyone has any " safety numbers " on specific essential oils.....I do > have martin watts basic oil safety file and looked for an example on > peppermint...but there really wasnt anything on it as it says there > has been no testings on it......And some soapers just go on the > 0.5-1oz of eo or fo in the soap per pound, But of course with > something like tea tree, that would be too high..... If we search the I-Net we can find many " opinions " on any subject .. to include whether the Moon is made of Green or Yellow Cheese. ;-) Legitimate data on safe percentages of EO are from tests generally conducted by dermatologists. These tests were usually conducted (and reported) to the R.I.F.M. (Research Institute for Fragrance Materials) and their sister organisation the I.F.R.A. (International Fragrance Research Association) based on a request from a commercial cosmetics producer .. and they don't necessarily (always?) relate to wash off products .. like soaps. But they can .. if .. a person has a habit of using the same soap day in and day out .. or if they like to linger for long periods of time in the bath .. which some folks do. For well over 30 years, Martin Watt compiled data findings on essential oil safety that was reported to these organizations and published in the Food and Chemicals Toxicity Journal. He has updated some data on oils that were not previously reported on .. Peppermint was one that had no data .. but I don't know if he has updated data on that oil. I know the above because for many years I was the publisher and sole distributor in North and South America of Martin's Safety Manual, " Plant Aromatics " .. but maybe 2 + years ago I realized that I had saturated the market in America and it was no longer feasible for me to pay to have them printed 1,000 copies at a time .. so now Martin is the sole source. I have absolutely no commercial or personal interest in this other than advising folks of its availability .. which can help them to better practice safe use of EO. I will mention that frequency of use (which is as important in some cases as is initial dilution) has been considered when it was reported by these agencies .. meaning .. they put their fingers on the scales .. at least a tad of two. In the list archive are posts from me on this subject going back 7 or 8 years .. just go to the Special Search function and type in my name .. and Plant Aromatics in the subject line. One such post is at .. http://health./message/9051 > Any thoughts on where I could find more info on it for soap use? News Groups totally dedicated to soap making is a place to start but I am not sure of how accurate their information might be .. there is a lot of Russian Roulette playing in the soap, cosmetics and even EO blending areas. If I were into doing blends and such .. especially those designed for dermal application ... I would not attempt to do it without having the full version of Plant Aromatics as a desk side reference .. and even then I would cross my fingers. ;-) > Thanks > Caterina Welcome you are .. good luck .. y'all have a good one .. and keep smiling. :-) Butch ... http://www.AV-AT.com
