Guest guest
Ug. I'm so frustrated. My 2.5 year old son seems to be absolutely delectible to some sort of bug that lives in his bed... He's been waking up with bites on his arms, legs hands and feet. We are putting him to bed in long sleeves and pants but he's still getting bitten on exposed parts, and I think he even had a bite on the underside of his penis! We literally gave him a new bed...new wooden bed entirely. New mattress. New sheets. And he woke up...with new bites! Our daughter shares the room with him and doesn't have so much as a single bite. Briefly we thought this was from our bed, because I had a few bites...but that was one night only and then they were gone (our son usually spends his last hour, in the morning, sleeping in our bed). I'm totally baffled. We vaccumed toys, curtains...cleared out the cobwebs in the corner of the ceiling. The only thing we haven't done is really take a good look at his comfortor...I think I might toss it in the wash on a super hot temp. But it's a new blanket and synthetic material that is supposed to repel bugs and other allergins. And it is totally incased in a new outer sheet (hard to explain, but that's how you sleep here in Israel). Now he will scratch till the skin is swollen and bleeding, so I've been keeping his hands clean and his nails short. But he's still hysterical, espically when he first wakes up. I've tried dabbing these with straight undiluted lavendar, but he screams that it hurts him (we usually use it in a carrier oil for other issues and it's fine) I tried chamomile and got the same reaction. The only thing that brings him relief is straight tea tree oil applied with a q-tip right on the bites. I suppose this is also good, because in the time it takes me to get the q-tip and oil, he's scratched them to bleeding, so at least we are preventing infection. I've tried diluting it, but he just cries and cries, it won't do. It has to be straight. Now I've been using a blend I made of wheat germ oil with chamomile and lavendar in it on top of the tto. Again, I apply with a q-tip right on the bites. He seems fine with that and I'm hoping it will help relax the itching and avoid scars. Anyways, I have heard that vanilla eo applied to the body (I would dilute it with wheat germ...but is this safe for a little kid?) can prevent bites. I was also thinking of diffusing some pepperment eo in the room. I've tried eucalyptus but it didn't seem to do anything. Sorry this is so long, but I " m just so darned frustrated! I have no idea what is causing this (spider? mosquito?) and where it is and why it's only biting my son at about the same time every night (he wakes up screaming " oowie...owie " and grabbing at the bitten body part around 12:30-2am every night) My husband went in the other night with a flashlight and looked everywhere for something, then turned on all the lights and tore apart the bed/room...still couldn't find anything and just brought him back into our bed. Help!!!??? Thanks, Rivkah
Guest guest
Shalom Rivkah Go to a completely different location for a couple of nights with nothing from your house. E.g. new shirt / shorts. If he still gets the " bites " then it may be systemic, not environmental. DO NOT use lavender or tea tree (or any other oil) neat on the skin. You are setting up him for future problems of sensitization. .. Look in the archives for messages about this. After doing this try him with totally new/different bed clothes. He may have issues with the materials not necessarily with bugs. And yes the comforter may be the issue. Lovely warm/damp place for bugs to live. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Hi Rivkah Most likely you have bedbugs. And simply replacing things on a piecemeal basis will not solve the problem. You need to hire a professional exterminator and attack the problem all at once. They may want to use pesticides, but most pesticides are ineffective, except for DDT which has been banned at least in the US for many years and rightly so. I second the other members comments on not using essential oils to treat the bites. Try antibiotic ointment and possibly cortisone cream. The best of luck. Bedbugs are hard to get rid of.
