Guest guest
Hello everyone does anyone have any info on what oils/herbs are good for preventing ticks. My 5 year old had a tick on his back this past Sat. That we had to remove. This is the first one that we had this summer but had several last summer. I am desperate as to know what to do to prevent them. If anyone has any helpful info I would SO MUCH appreciate it. Blessings,
Guest guest
angie, there are some kids formlated natural sprays on the market and some of us make our own but I'd not do that for someone's child...thats a risk I'm not willing to take. Just be sure to check your child, if in an area where ticks are known, long pants and shirts....I know, its summer......if this is in your yard you can find online natural things you can do weekly to your yard to keep them at bay and always note when your child was bitten by a tick. That old wives tail that 'only the ticks with a white dot on their back will make you sick ' is WRONG. In Aug of 2007 I buried my 24 year old daughter and her newborn . A tick born disease the doctors missed then turned into a rare syndrome called ARDS....we found out post mortem that this was a tick born origin. So note on a calender when your child was bitten. If your child gets sick be sure to get that child checked out. Tick born illness can take time to show up so its not immediate. They cue to the doctors here should have been 'why is a 24 year old in July running fever up to 105?'........never a good sign given the time of year for several diseases and they should have checked instead of calling the infectious disease doctor when it was too late.... I'm not trying to scare anyone. But this could have been preventable and we ALL need to be on our game when it comes to these things. evie >
Guest guest
Someone at my herbal store told me tea tree oil a few drops in shampoo bottle or less in liquid body soap bottle helps repel bugs I know we use tea tree oil sprays on my dogs for fleas, ticks and mosquitos also to sooth itching and hot spots. --\ ----------------------- Making Your Own Natural Insect Repellent Herbalist Debra Nuzzi-St. Claire suggests combining the following essential oils to make a natural insect repellent: 1/2 ounce citronella oil 1/4 ounce lavender oil 1/8 ounce pennyroyal oil 1/8 ounce tea tree oil 1/8 ounce jojoba oil Do not use this blend undiluted on your skin. Follow these instructions for diluting: To make an insect repellent oil that can be used on your body, add 16 ounces of jojoba or almond oil to the base oil mixture and blend thoroughly. For an insect repellent spray, add 16 ounces of vodka to the base oil mixture, pour into a spray bottle, and shake before using. Info came from: http://www.naturodoc.com/library/lifestyle/bug_repellent.htm --\ --- We use shampoo , or body liquid soaps to dilute the oils, and we use less than this recipe calls for.also for people with children in school it is a good repellent for lice.Be really careful when using any type of oil on the skin make sure you test iton a small part like the top of your hand to be sure there are no reactions beforeusing on over all body. *~Stormy~* --- On Fri, 6/12/09, Ratzlaff <ratzlaff wrote: Ratzlaff <ratzlaff Hello everyone does anyone have any info on what oils/herbs are good for preventing ticks. Guest guest
By accident last year I had been out harvesting wild lavender and sage and all I had to use was a body oil. I make one to match all my soaps and shampoos LOL....this was a blend of amber, patchouli , forget the other things but not a typical thing you would think would help and I'm the ONLY one who didn't get a bite from anything. I wonder if by using body oil every where that is scented with citrus and a touch of mint if that oil is not aiding in our natural carbon dioxide release that so enchants the pesky varmints. I've had success with that, I did one with a nice soft lemon, I did on with pepperberry and all of them worked so long as I covered all of me. I did a rub down before i got dressed , that in turn also scented my clothes and btw, whoever did that blend and posted it, fab job.....but there are ways. Old timers around here use sulphur in their rolled up cuffs in jeans.......peeeeeeeeyew! I wouldn't recommend that for a kid. I've also heard that downy sheets work so I'm thinking....who says you have to smell bad to keep bugs off? I am keeping this recipe that was shared so thanks to the poster! If pregnant or if you THINK you might be, please do not use pennyroyal. Other mints will work. evie
Guest guest
I've been researching for a safe and effective way to keep bugs/ticks at bay for a friend of mine heading to Guatemala this summer. Just about every recipe I find lists lavender. b/c of this, I have tested a light coating of lavender EO in a plain lotion spread head to toe (out of the shower) and have enjoyed bug-free days. No stinkies, not terribly expensive for those that don't have a well-stocked EO cabinet and lavender EO is very child-friendly. Guest guest
Hi all -- I've been pretty much quiet since joining this list, due to time constraints mostly, but would like to share an anti-tick testimonial. A friend was hiking with a group recently (northern Wisconsin woods). Before the hike she had used a lotion containing rose geranium essential oil. After the hike, everyone else counted at least 50 ticks on themselves, and she had 1. I've read about using the EO to repel ticks, but hadn't heard any testimonials that told how well it actually worked, so I thought this was significant. Also, while in a local shop the other day, I picked up a bottle of spray repellent called Happy Trails - Aromatherapy Mist for the All-Outdoors, made by V'TAE ( VTAE.com -- I have no connections with this other than being a customer). A customer had shared that it worked better than what the people around her were using on a recent outing (with the exception, possibly, of mosquitoes); ingredients are alcohol, water, eos of catnip, lemongrass, citronella, patchouli and clove. I've been searching for my bottle of rose geranium to add a few drops of that to it too, just to give it that boost. Lavender eo also sounds like a winner. Nancy M, who thanks you all for the wonderful information shared here >I've been researching for a safe and effective way to keep bugs/ticks at bay for a friend of mine heading to Guatemala this summer.
