Guest guest
Hello Everyone, Sorry for posting to both groups but I know these are the best 2 groups to ask We bought a camper whose previous owners were smokers, I think they must have been living in it because appears to be permeated. The mattress, curtains & carpet have been removed & some of the cushions replaced so far but the problem seems to be the walls, ceiling, etc. Without gutting the whole thing what can we use? I am going to go into some of my natural cleaning books & see what I can come up with but would like to know if anyone has a tried & true process that they have used? After scrubbing down the walls & ceiling we are going to paint & I plan to put lavender eo in the paint as I have done previously & we will be putting in laminate flooring. Thanks & I truly appreciate any input that can be given. God Bless You & Yours, Georgia (hahagranny) Dear Georgia,I would air out the camper as much as possible, until it is gassed off the smell will remain. Beyond that, I have a client in New Orleans who has a dance school right on the water. Last summer a storm flooded the whole area and left sea life everywhere. After removal of rotting shrimp, fish etc. I instructed them to keep the temperature inside around 65-70 degrees, they washed with d-limonene and some essential oils. Next they 'fogged, " the entire facility with peppermint terpenes. A fogger is an apparatus where you can combine essential oils, terpenes with water and a little soap to bind the ingredients. It allows you to deliver a fine particle mist or a heavy spray depending upon the nozzle setting.Worked like a charm, peppermint terpenes are super concentrated so a little goes a long way. Good luck and have fun camping!Be well,Rachel

A customer of mine did just that in her apartment, with the same problem you have: the previous tenants were smokers. She let those EO's evaporate on an aromastream every day until the smell of smoke was gone! Saskia
Guest guest
, hahagranny wrote: > would like to know if anyone has > a tried & true process that they have used? Georgia, We have gotten rid of horrible smoke smells by using an ozone generator. Companies that clean up after fires use these to eliminate the sooty odor. They're expensive but you can rent them. Hopefully, you might know someone who owns one. We run the generator for a few hours in an enclosed area & then air out the space afterwards. Breathing high concentrations of ozone is unpleasant and unhealthy but it breaks down pretty quickly so we stay out until it's gone. Another thing to consider is that there is some research out there about ozone reacting with terpenes to form sub-micron sized particles. (bad indoor air quality - like invisible indoor smog) So, even though I air out the space, I wouldn't use essential oils in cleaners, candles, nebulizers, etc. in a room before " ozonating. " Once the ozone smell is gone, I could use the terpene rich oils if I wanted to. When we travel, we bring along the ozone generator. If we get stuck with a smoking permitted motel room, we run the generator while we're out to dinner. When we return, we open the windows for a few minutes. This has never failed us. It sure sounds like a lot of trouble I know but, cigarette smell is not pleasant and ozone makes it go away. Nicotine stains can bleed through paint even weeks after it's been applied. If, after scrubbing, the walls are still yellow, you can buy a primer at the hardware store that is specifically designed to prevent bleed through. My son worked as a painter and said he thinks any primer will do the trick but multiple layers of paint often do not. However you solve your problem, I hope that when you're camping the only smoke you smell is from a campfire. Good luck & happy travels to you! Guest guest
According to the " Queen of Clean " you can try Odorz http://www.azfamily.com/gmaz/queen/faq.html I bought a big container of this stuff at Pet Smart. I think it was about $15. I use it to remove smoke odors from used paperback books (put some of it a ziplock along with the book and let it sit for a while). It has done a good job for me, don't know how it would work on something large like a camper. Also removes skunk odors <GRIN>. Guest guest
Thanks Cynthia, will check on it. We tried cleaning the carpet but we were not pleased with the results so we ripped it out. We may end up replacing the subflooring although it seems to be in pretty good shape. Virgil just got the ac fixed & the filter was cleaned in that. We will check on the odorzout, the kilz. think I will probably put a little of the lavender eo in the kilz also. Thanks for remembering & sending the link.
