Howdy Leann,

> Is Coriandrum Sativum EO derived from the coriander seeds or from

(Cilantro) the leaf??

Coriander EO is extracted from the Seeds and Cilantro EO is extracted from

the Leaves .. of the plant Coriandrum sativum.

> Also, is it correct that Coriander is the name for the seed and Cilantro

is the leaf and Coriandrum sativum the actual latin plant name?

Coriandrum sativum is the correct Botanical Name for the plant .. but

technically, Coriander is the name of both the Seeds and the Leaf .. man has

just elected to distinguish between them by using different Common Names ..

just as in many parts of the world one must order the same fish by a

different name .. depending on the age of the fish. You'll also hear some

folks referring to the Leaves of the plant as Chinese Parsley.

> If there are two separate derivatives of this plant, what would the proper

names be for my research purposes?

Same plant. We have been (and still are) eating Cilantro in salads .. but

just yesterday we harvested Coriander Seeds from our dried plants. We put

the dried plants in a plastic garbage bag and beat it against a tree ..

loads of seeds in the bottom of the bag. This method removes maybe 70% of

the seeds but if you've ever tried to remove them by hand you'll know that

getting but 70% of them is not that bad an idea .. and besides that .. there

is only so much need existing for Coriander Seeds.

Amusing part of our Coriander crop is .. first, its an Annual .. and we

planted NONE this year .. but it volunteered and sprang up all over the

garden. Volunteers were the norm this year .. we got taters in our maters

and maters in our corn and three varieties of watermelon though we planted

none. Annuals do come back .. and the more compost one uses the easier it

is for this to happen.

> Can one of the EO wizards here tell me? Marge, Chris, Butch (you are all

my gurus, lol)??

I musta read this one afore the Wizards and Gurus did .. but this is my 3

cents on the question. ;-)

Thanks Butch I'm glad to have that confirmed.

I'm definitely a cilantro lover, and as the tomatoes and peppers come in, Pico

de Gallo and tortilla chips are a staple almost every day chez moi, lol. Add

some cukes and it's Gazpacho for supper. Chin Chin's in L.A. used to make this

Hunan chicken with a spicy black bean sauce smothered in cilantro...so of course

I had to replicate that. How do some people live without herbs? Must be a boring

existence!

I used the same trick for my seeds last year! Worked like a charm. My

coriander/cilantro plants here are not doing as well as they usually do. Last

year they were abundant, now this year everything seems to have this yellowish

tinge to it and they're spindly and overall look pretty sad. It looks insect

related (lots of little holes in the leaves)Rosemary got some kind of mildew

that's apparently common to it, from what I've read. Sigh.

But my thyme, yarrow, and mints just took over and are all flourishing.

Especially the licorice mint and my hyssop. It's been a weird summer with lots

of fluctuating temps and the Japanese beetles are still pretty horrible here in

southern IL. You see them everywhere.

I'm also worried because there has been a truck coming along every week spraying

something and I haven't read or heard anything about what chemicals it's

actually spraying! That's a bit worrisome, and I'm waiting for a call back from

the town clerk.
