If it's late fall and the plant has already flowered (fruited, seeded, etc.) and died back down, then it's energy or life force is all in the root. If it's in leaf and has yet to flower, it's energy is all going into the leaves. If it's flowering, that's where it's energy is, especially when the flowers are in bud and first opening.
