Guest guest
I read that peru balsam is not recommended for use on skin as it can be an an irritant/sensitizer. However, I've seen it used in the diaper ointment known as " Butt Paste " . I was thinking of using it in soap or lotion. Any thoughts on this oil in skin products? Thanks, Sue
Guest guest
Hi Sue There seems to be a lot of contradictory information flying around out there about Peru Balsam. No doubt this is in part due to the confusion between the resin and the distilled product, with the latter generally thought to be safer in terms of sensitization. In his book Plant Aromatics, Martin Watt lists the OIL as having no irritation or sensitization at 8%, which is probably more than you would use to scent the products. On the other hand, in his discussion of Peru Balsam oil, he says " I can see no justification for applying the essential oil to anyone's skin, and in my opinion it should not be used for this purpose. " Go figure. Sorry, that's not much help, is it? Guest guest
That was part of the confusion. I picked up my copy of Plant Aromatics and saw that as well. I suppose it has something to do with his statements about whether or not allergens are removed and there is the Author's note which indicae " the reports of adverse effects are too numerous to fully list here. " That's why I questioned the fact that I have seen it in stores as an ingredient in this particular, and popular, diaper rash ointment.
