Guest guest
I was looking at the Cancer Prevention Coalition's website and came across something that has really puzzled me. They list tea tree and lavender as hormone disruptors found in cosmetics and personal care products along with all the parabens, phthalates, and formaldehydes. http://www.preventcancer.com/consumers/cosmetics/documents/ Table3_HormDis_forweb_jun189.pdf Does anyone have any more information about this? I sell products with lavender and tea tree. Am I upping women's risk for breast cancer by exposing them to these oils? Guest guest
Tea tree EO is very strong and is only used at 1% in soap, a wash-off product. A leave-on product would use even less. I believe (without researching my notes) Lavender and Tea tree EOs both have allergens in them as do other EO/FOs which can be sensitizing or cause allergies. This is a reason why we must get our recipes certified by a cosmetic chemist safety assessor in Europe so that our products don't hurt anyone. We must list the allergens on our labels plus complete ingredients in INCI. Guest guest
Hi Jessica, This was discussed at length when newspapers across the country carried an article claiming that lavender and tea tree caused gynocomastia (premature development of breasts) in young boys. Articles were traced back to a research paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which we in the AT community agressively disputed. The study was flawed in many ways. You can see a series of papers published on aromaconnection here: (they are sorted by topic in reverse date order, so start at the bottom.) http://www.aromaconnection.org/lavendertea_treegynecomastia/ There is also discussion elsewhere that you might find. Guest guest
A safety assessment will not indicate something like hormone disruption. I am looking a this from a perspective of whether I can be confident that my product is not messing with people's endocrine system especially when I have been so careful to avoid phthalates and parabens in my formulas.
