Guest guest
Sorry, Ien, been absent a bit (pesky work, you know) :-) It's for pressing additional tincture or infused oil out of the marc after the process . . . We've mainly used a much larger one for commercial use, but I had one of those smaller red ones. It should come with a washable mesh bag into which you put the strained herbs then screw the flat plate to press additional tincture or oil out under pressure. That $39.95 one looks substantial enough to work for small batches, but I have no experience with it. Wasn't around when I got my smaller one, which was more expensive. Let me know if you do get it if you are happy with it. If you are tincturing or infusing fresh herbs, this process will put more moisture into the finished product . . . Which with infused oils you need to be very careful to decant off and make sure none remains in the oil or it will mold/mildew. Not quite so crucial with alcohol tinctures. You know this, of course, just adding info for newbies. I am used to just covering the herbs in alcohol.
Guest guest
Thanks Marcia, I did not know that! I thought it might make herbal juices. I know several excellent salve makers and will just give them my business. We can't all do everything, I use very little.
Guest guest
The herb press I've seen sure looks like the cheese press I have. There are instructions for making a cheese press at: http://fiascofarm.com/dairy/cheesepress.html. You might need to change the dimensions, but the general instructions are there. Just a thought.
