Guest guest
Hello everyone: I have one for you! I have been involved with natural healthcare in some form or another for over 10 years now. What I have only just learned about are essential oils, maybe about a year now. I am researching as fast as I can, but there is a question that I can't figure out that maybe you can help me with. I have heard that some fruits cannot be made into essential oils, i.e., strawberry, blueberry, peach, since they have no real " rind " to extract the oils from. Well, there is a product out there that claims to be 100% all natural that includes " Peach essential oil " . I did some research over the past few days and have finally found a web site that does indeed sell fruit essential oils (not only citrus) and I emailed the owner to confirm that these were ALL NATURAL. She called the company where she purchases them and was told that yes, indeed they are a BRAND NEW TECHNOLOGY and all natural. The link is: http://www.purejoyplanet.com/store/index.php?cPath=25 & osCsid=7a7ed4593a2 c53fbd8721dceb3be0160 Would anybody be able to shed some light on this for me? I don't want to put them in my formulations if they are not all natural, yet I am very excited by the prospect of these oils! Perhaps they are " flavor " oils and she is marketing them as essential oils? And if so, they might work just as well in my products. Thanks for your help!! Guest guest
Hi Kathy, This is a very good question as I'm sure many out there are wondering the same. You wrote > I have heard that some fruits cannot be made into essential oils, This is true and anyone that claims they are obtaining essential oils that smells AND tastes like a specific fruit are hoodwinking you (and others) Essential oils come from specialized plant parts that produce the 'essential oil'. The essential oil can only be extracted from the plant by steam/water distillation or by solvents with the exception of the citrus peel oils that are cold pressed. (There are also a few other methods of obtaining essential oils but they are extemely costly and cost prohibitive). And although the scent may be representative of the plant the taste typically is not since it is so very concentrated (and would need to be highly diluted to recognizable and to be ingestible). Many 'fruits' espescially the 'fleshy' kinds cannot have essential oils extracted as there are none (or extremely few) of these specialized cells in the fleshy portions. And what little there is is cost prohibitive to extract. So when someone tells you that they have the essential oil from a 'fruit' that smells AND tastes like that fruit realize that that they are most likely selling a flavoring oil that is concentrated. The other thing is that for an essential oil to be labeled for consumption it is regulated by many agencies not only the FDA but the USDA (United Stated Department of Agriculture) and must be packaged in a State approved facility for food. (These regulations can be found in the Federal Code of Regulations a very large book - several volumes). So when someone states a fruit extract is an essential oil - you are right question this very deeply. I went to the website and look at one of their recipes using their so called " essential oil of blueberry " . On the recipe itself said Blueberry extract (not essential oil). It called to use 4-8 drops of the 'oil'. Well that in itself for ingestion, if it was a true essential oil, would be horribly strong as most essential oils are so strong that they are bitter and more. Personally I think she is selling a highly concentrated flavoring extract in oil form. Especially if you go deeper into her site you find that she says " Flavoring Extract " consistently not essential oil. Those of us in the essential oil business have on our bottle labels the following information: Plant Common name, Plant botanical or latin name of the species distilled, the method of extraction, the Plant part, and the country of origin. These should be on any bottle of essential oil. If not, then question the validity of the product being sold. Please know there is more to essential oils - testing and more. IF you can find out the processing by which 'these fruit essential oils' are trully obtained and what else is mixed with them, you might be able to feel you could use them but to me I think she is selling nothing more than concentrated fruit 'flavoring' extracts. Oh and the word " Natural " is way to broad in the food and cosmetics world. So again, you must be your own judge. Again personally, she may have some wonderful smelling and tasting Flavoring extracts from the fruits but essential oils they are not. Yours in Aromatherapy, Penny Your One Stop Aromatherapy Shop! Guest guest
Hi. Thanks for your very instructive answer! It really cleared up a lot. I did speak on the phone with the owner and a rep for the company that actually formulates these oils, and indeed, they are not essential oils, but flavor oils. Have a nice day!
