Guest guest
Poor Kathleen! I truly, sincerely, feel for you. Unfortunately there is NOTHING that prolific hungry deer won't eat. Potato tops, they LOVE. Just because a plant is toxic for us doesn't mean they can't handle it. If they are desperate enough they will pull up onions and garlic and then spit them out. A friend of mine saw that happen. There is a simple equation: no fence = no garden. Save your energy, and use it to find some way to earn the money to have a solid fence built by someone you can pay instead of nag. Trust me on this, it took me about a decade of half-assed measures and that all USED TO work before we built the present Fort Knox. Garlic should have been planted last fall. Guest guest
Your not going to like my answer -- From my experance even if they don't eat something --they will pull it out of the gound! For example -- tulips -- they don't like them, but they bit off the flower and spit them out. Unless its very cold and they are very hungry, your underground ground crops i.e. potatoes/onions won't be bothered too much. Good luck with your garden Rita , Kathleen Petrides <Beadhussy wrote: > > sigh. Can't have much of a garden this year, Himself can't be bothered to > put up a fence. But I WANT to grow some stuff... Guest guest
Yes, I found out the hard way that they will destroy tulips. However, other bulbs, Alliums, Daffodils, Narcissus, Grape Hiacynth . . . They completely ignore. They also love apple/cherry/ leaves/blossoms, so be sure to protect them. Mine have started to eat daffodil buds, grape hyacinths often get nibbled too. Sorry, Ien . . . Must be those more rugged deer you have way up there in the *real* wild. :-) I've not seen one daffodil or narcissus get nibbled, and we planted over 500 last fall. Most are up and blooming, but some still coming. The grape hyacinth isn't blooming yet . . . Let you know if it survives another year. Do you have alliums? They aren't blooming yet this year, but deer left them alone last year. Haven't seen the deer, but I know they've been through. Tulips we missed when re-planting closer to the house where they don't come as often were dessimated. I put a metal scuplture that looks like a Native American out by the apple tree that they can get to .. . . We'll see if it does anything. Really don't want to move the tree.
