Guest guest
K, I have found that if they are starving. Deer will eat most anything. I have found three deterrents at this time. Lemon peelings, orange peelings and tomato plants all seem safe from deer and most other four footed animals. Even plants protected with those peelings around the garden area, tend to keep the 4 footed critters away. so if you eat or use lemons and oranges. Save the peelings ad toss them around the garden area. Just remembered a couple of other things that might help. Onions and garlic might tend to deter critters. I can think of one thing you would think would deter critters, are the hot pepper plants. Well, they don't do diddly squat. They'll eat the peppers and then the plants over the next day or two. BTW, dear will literally eat anything. Deer do have some things they normally don't eat. Hey, had to be a little funny here. BTW, I've grown potatoes, but they've always bee mostly surrounded by tomato plants. So I have no idea if potato plants can deter deer. Bill Kathleen Petrides wrote: > sigh. Guest guest
Tnks everyone Well, after a little " oonching " and naggiing and moaning and wearing the sad face.... he's given in. I'm getting a fence. Garden area won't be huge but it will be big enough to plant some good stuff. Now I'm just going to have to wait a little while long while he figures out how to get down about six trees. BIG trees. I did remind him that pea planting season starts in a couple of weeks. I may have to give up peas for this year... if that's all, I'll be a happy girl. Oh and, yes Ien, I know garlic is supposed to be planted in the fall, but I was just going to use them as a deterrent more than anything else. I'm not planning on harvesting much this year, was going to plant more as a deterrent than anything else. Now I can wait until Autumn. Parsnips are another wacky plant. That I can't havest until about FEBRUARY, but they sure are tasty and sweet then. Now I have to plan it out. The fun part. Lets see, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, pumpkins, zuchinni, summer squash, spinach, corn... maybe not corn, carrots, rhubarb, strawbs.... WHEEEEEEEEE!
