" Agreed to that. I am entirely in favor of an honest, open discussion on the culture of entitlement. Could we please stop promising everything to everybody, and accept imperfection? ANY system can be abused. A society needs both people who care for the collective picture, AND people who stand up for the rugged individual, just like a car needs both a gas pedal and a brake. Could we please accept the fact that sometimes we DIE? Could we perhaps do that with more palliative care, including the legal use of substances presently banned? So much insane expense comes at the very end of life, or is occurred trying to keep babies alive who Nature might have let go. Yesterday's tragic miscarriage is today's extreme preemie. Where do we draw a line? When we say we " should not play God " , is keeping people who are trying to let go, or changing their mind about doing Earth in the first place, not also playing God? I realize this is a huge can of worms. The political discourse, both here and in the USA, suffers from several ailments. Part of it is extreme partisanship that poisons everything. Why do we find it so hard to say to an opponent: " You have a point " ? Granting the other side a point is not the same as buying the entire position. Why does everything have to be " either/or " , instead of and/and? Anyway......thanks to the moderators for allowing this discussion. There are few places where people of opposing views have a chance to exchange ideas in a spirit of mutual respect. All those TV commercials for drugs (and food with no calories or trans fats or whatever) seem to imply that people who use the advertised drug/frankenfood never, ever die. Heck, they make it sound like everyone who is dead only died because they were too stupid to consume these wonder products, poor deluded souls. It's insidious. How did they ever legalize drug advertising anyway? Oh right, we have to have a free market. I'm really likin' how that worked in banking and lending. Anyhoo, thanks for the chuckle in the midst of this discussion on this new health care legislation. I absolutely refuse to panic until I see exactly what, if anything, it will force upon me. best regards, Rachel in AZ
