Guest guest
Apologies in advance if I am plagiarizing anyone, I tend to save just snippits of posts. Personally, I have used the bright yellow sticky flycatcher thingies. I stack them around the perimeter of the plants and then shake the plants to get the aphids in the air. I have also used the soapy water spray which also worked well. Here are the notes I have about these pesky bugs, hopefully one will strike your fancy. Cynthia Mix with 2 Tbl. Neem oil, poly 20 or 80, 1 gal water and spray weeds to help repel insects such as ticks, aphids, etc. This coats the skin of those unwanted insects and smothers them out. You can even add 2 TBL of baking soda to the mixture. Minus the essential oil, this is a great organic insect control for edible and flowering plants. Spearmint Oil : ants, aphids, caterpillars, black flea beetle, gnats, lice, moths, and plant lice. Peppermint Oil : ants, aphids, bean beetle, cabbage root fly, caterpillars, black flee beetle, flies, lice, moths, and plant lice. Rapeseed oil is poisonous to living things and is an excellent insect repellent. I have been using it (in very diluted form, as per instructions) to kill the aphids on my roses for the last two years. It works very well; it suffocates them. Ask for it at your nursery. Rape is an oil that is used as a lubricant, fuel, soap and synthetic rubber base and as a illuminate for color pages in magazines. Companion planting - spread some of the Garlic and Onions .. also some Chives .. out amongst the vegetables .. they repel ants, aphids, beetles and other bad guys. Avoid putting Garlic or Fennel around Peas, Beans, Strawberries or any Cole crop .. like Cabbage, Collards, Brussels Sprouts, Broccoli, etc., cause they don't like Garlic .. same goes for Rosemary around Potatoes and Mint around Parsley .. Aphids... Wash entire plant off with mild detergent and water. > planting mums in with your veggies help with aphids and other non beneficials and plain old ashes for leeches sticks to them and kills them. Also bury halve a can of beer in your garden and leeches can get in but I think they get 'tanked' and forgot how to get out Herbs are not very prone to pests but if you do have an infestation (aphids, red spider, white fly) either cut back the herbs or use an organic pesticide like the Margaret Roberts Organic Insecticide. Aphids may be present on many plants. The best control is natural predators, such as lacewings, and praying mantis. Acquaint yourself with these insects, and if present do not use insecticides. Hosing the aphids off with a forceful spray of water is helpful in gaining control. A couple of drops of dish soap in a spay bottle of water can also be very effective. Aphids Small green red, pink of black oval insects that cluster on new leaves, undersides and buds. If infestations are light, do nothing, beneficial insects will take care of them. For heavy infestations, dislodge the pests with a strong water spray, get under leaves. Use garlic tonic. *Garlic tonic* Mince 1 whole garlic bulb of garlic and mix it into 1 cup of veggie oil. Place the mix in a glass jar with a tight lid and place in the fridge for a day or two. Mix 1 tbsp garlic oil with 3 drops of liquid dish soap and 1 qt water (use blender). Put in spray bottle. Aphids / spider mites - add 1 teas vegetable oil, 1 teas dishwashing liquid to 1 qt H20, put in spray bottle, remember to spray underneath leaves. Ladybugs eat aphids - water plants before releasing bugs. Make ladybug houses. Release lady bugs at night
