Resolution of intractable hiccups after near-infrared irradiation of relevant acupoints. Am J Med Sci. 2006 Aug;332(2):93-6. From the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ccc, cst, lty, csl, tkc), and the Department of Neurology (ljc), Tri-Service General Hospital, National Defense Medical Center, Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China. BACKGROUND:: Intractable hiccups are occasionally encountered in the presence of stroke but are usually difficult to manage. METHODS:: We describe two stroke patients with intractable hiccups that were refractory to pharmacological treatment but were well resolved by application to relevant acupoints with the modality linear polarized near- infrared ray equipment on PC 6 (Nei Guan), ST 36 (Zu San Li), and DU 9 (Chih Yang), which are the empirical acupoints aimed at regulating gastrointestinal mobility and function of the thoracic organ. RESULTS:: The first patient who received the treatment for only one time came out with a dramatic termination of intractable hiccups 3 hours later and with no recurrence thereafter. We applied the same treatment on the second patient once a day for 8 consecutive days, which led to progressive amelioration of intractable hiccups. CONCLUSIONS:: This is the first report about the complete resolution of intractable hiccups due to stroke using near-infrared irradiation to acupoints, rather than using conventional pharmacologic therapy, traditional acupuncture, or moxibustion. Consequently, these findings suggest that linear polarized near-infrared ray irradiation, with its noninvasive properties, might be an alternative treatment for intractable hiccups after stroke. Linyi Hospital of TCM, Shandong, China. swcwlq.syh OBJECTIVE: To search for the best method for treatment of fasciitis of back muscles. METHODS: One hundred cases of fasciitis of back muscles were randomly divided into two groups. The treatment group of 50 cases were treated with scraping and warming acupuncture and moxibustion at Fengmen (BL 12), Feishu (BL 13), Quyuan (SI 13), Bingfeng (SI 12), Jiafeng, local pressure pain points, and cord-like node; and the control group of 50 cases with simple acupuncture. RESULTS: In the treatment group, 40 cases were cured and 10 cases improved with a total effective rate of 100.0%; in the control group, 26 cases were cured and 16 cases improved, 8 cases were ineffective with a total effective rate of 84.0%. The treatment group in improvement of pressure pain and pain was better than the control group, with scores significantly decreased (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Scraping therapy and warming acup-moxibustion have obvious effect on fasciitis of back muscles, and it is a better therapy for this disease. PMID: 16903597 [PubMed - in process] Lu ZX. [Clinical observation on acupuncture plus laser radiation for treatment of facial spasm][Article in Chinese] Zhongguo Zhen Jiu. 2006 Jul;26(7):475-6. Puyang People's Hospital, Henan, China. OBJECTIVE: To search for a convenient, safe and effective method for treatment of facial spasm. METHODS: Three hundred and ninety cases of facial spasm were divided into 2 groups in order of visiting: medication group of 200 cases were treated with routine medicine, and acupuncture and laser treatment group of 190 cases treated with acupuncture plus laser radiation. After treatment of 30 days, their therapeutic effects were summarized. RESULTS: The total effective rate, the cured rate and the 6-month recurrence rate were 93.7%, 64.7%, 6.7% in the acupuncture and laser treatment group, and the corresponding figures were 62.0%, 32.0% and 33.9% in the medication group respectively, with a very significant difference between the two groups in the therapeutic effect (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture plus laser radiation is a convenient and safe method for treatment of facial spasm. PMID: 16903596 [PubMed - in process] Liu SK, Zhao XM, Xi ZM. [incidence rate and acupuncture-moxibustion treatment of post-stroke depression][Article in Chinese] Zhongguo Zhen Jiu. 2006 Jul;26(7):472-4. The First Central Hospital of Baoding City, Hebei 071000, China. liusukun2003 OBJECTIVE: To understand the incidence of post-stroke depression (PSD) and the therapeutic effect of acupuncture-moxibustion. METHODS: Five hundred and sixty cases were rating with Hamilton depression scale, and lesion parts, gender, age and property of stroke between the PSD and non-PSD were compared by analysis of variance, chi2 test, and then the patients of PSD were randomly divided into two groups and treated respectively with Prozac-20 and acup-moxibustion at Sishencong (EX-HN 1), Anmian, Neiguan (PC 6), Shenmen (HT 7), Zusanli (ST 36), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Taichong (LR 3), Zhaohai (KI 6), Shenmai (BL 62). RESULTS: The total incidence rate of PSD was 43.9%, with no relation to the lesion parts, gender, age and property of stroke (P > 0.05), and there were very significant differences in HAMD scores before and after treatment in the two groups (P < 0.0001), with no significant difference in the effective rate between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: PSD has a high incidence and influences the recovery of nervous function, and it should be treated at early stage. Acup-moxibustion and Prozac-20 have similar therapeutic effect. [Clinical observation on combined acupuncture and moxibustion therapy for treatment of 160 cases of polyneuritis][Article in Chinese] Zhongguo Zhen Jiu. 2006 Jul;26(7):469- 71. China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Beijing University of TCM, China. OBJECTIVE: To observe clinical therapeutic effect of combined acupuncture and moxibustion therapy on polyneuritis. METHODS: One hundred and sixty cases were treated with combined scalp acupuncture, body acupuncture (stimulating root of nerve as main), cupping and pricking at segmental root of nerve, and electric hot moxibustion, and their therapeutic effects were observed. RESULTS: One hundred and thirty-eight cases were cured (86.3%) and the total effective rate was 100.0%. The average recovery time for clinical symptoms was 12.81 days, the average recovery time for nervous system signs was 19.76 days, the average recovery time for recovery of ocular muscular dyskinesia was 15.14 days. There was significant therapeutic effect for improvement of simple symptoms, with significant differences when the first and second therapeutic courses compared with that before treatment (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The combined acupuncture and moxibustion therapy has a definite therapeutic effect on polyneuritis. PMID: 16903594 [PubMed - in process] Yu CD, Wu BH, Zhang J, Song HM, Wang GS, Yu Z. [Effect of skull acupuncture and scalp acupuncture on serum vascular endothelial growth factor in the patient of acute cerebral infarction][Article in Chinese] Zhongguo Zhen Jiu. 2006 Jul;26(7):466-8.
