Does anyone have advice on choosing glass jars and lids?

Do certain lids seal better than others? Plastic or metal?

How about you Tim, I know you're reading this!

I plan on using 32oz straight sided jars for raw powdered herbs.

So far the best deal I've found is at General Bottle Supply in LA:

Paul,

I use the glass gallon & 1/2 gallons from Specialty Bottle

www.specialtybottle.com - they also have great customer service, and

great prices on jars, tincture bottles and salve jars.

Ball canning jars also work great for smaller quantities or small

seeds such as che qian zi.

As a bottle supplier goes - I also use www.specialtybottle.com. Good prices,

no minimums.

The majority of my herbal pharmacy is granules, however I do keep about

50-60 or so raw-powdered herbs on hand for making liniments, compresses,

poultices, soaks and the like. I also keep some commonly used raw whole

herbs on hand for congees & soups.

To reduce the expense of storing raw powdered & whole herbs while preserving

them at the same time, I've been using a vacuum sealer and a metal file

cabinet. The vacuum sealer removes the oxygen and reseal's the herbs and the

file cabinet helps protect them from light exposure. I use labeled hanging

folders to keep each herb sorted and easy to find. (The " squared-bottom " or

" box " style hanging folder works best.) Herbs that are sensitive to going

rancid, I vacuum seal and keep in the freezer. This method works well for me

for the amount of raw herbs I keep on hand.
