An herbal remedy for impotence: more than was bargained for

Hi All,

 

Read between the lines of the mails between Susannah Kenyon and me,

below.

 

According to the the paper [Kenyon et al. J Clin Pharmacol .2006; 46: 1379-

1381, reference below], the male enhancer in question was ¡°Tongkat Ali

Power Plus¡± (Etumax), Maybe they should rename the product " Alley Tom

Cat Power Plus " !! It is offered for sale at a knock-down $247 for 5 X10

capsules (circa $5 per capsule!).

rather miniscule) little appendage on the packet to the left of the Phyto

Diasol package!

 

According to Kenyon et al., the listed agents in the capsules were Eurycoma

longifolia (100 mg), Cordyceps sinensis (50 mg), Ginsenosides¨CPanx

ginseng root (50 mg), Alpiniae oxyphyllae fruit (50 mg), Cistanche

deserticola stem (45 mg), Epimedium sagittatum leaves (45 mg),

Ganoderma lucidum mycelium (45 mg), Cinnamomum cassia bark (25 mg),

Morus alba leaves (25 mg), and Poria cocos mycelium (15 mg). At the first

glance, this looks like a reasonably well thought-out virility enhancer.

 

The sting in the tail was a heavy (unlisted) lacing of sildenafil, as detected

and assayed by Kenyon's group. As the patient was already taking sidenafil

(50mg/time), as well as antihypertensive medication (!), the authors'

estimated intake from both sources would have exceeded the maximum

recommended dose of 100mg sidenafil /24 hours.

 

Yikes! I shudder to think what those capsules would have done to some of

my more doddery old male friends have had mini-strokes or heart attacks

and are on continuous antihypertensives!!

 

The thought should be enough to send a randy old goat to have a very ocold

shower!

Noted. I understand your predicament vis a vis the publishers.

 

I emailed the publishers yesterday to ask their permission to post the full

text to closed groups of professionals. If they agree, will you agree also?

 

Even if permission is not granted, our TCM professionals know that many

CHM products imported from the East to the West are adulterated with non-

listed copy-cat drugs or chemicals, or have heavy metal or bacterial counts

that would disbar them from use in developed countries.

 

However, high levels of viagra-type adulterants in what was marketed as a

male-enhancment herbal tonic was one that I would not have suspected!!

 

That recipe must have had the kick of a mare-starved stallion in it for half-

limp sugar-daddies, but must be a high-risk product for those with dicky

hearts as well as hearty dicks!

 

Though not forwarding the article per-se to our members, I am forwarding a

copy of this mail to them. They can read between the lines (and have a

giggle) from this.
