Kejibeling leaf (Strobilanthus crispus) belongs to the family Acanthaceae;

has potasium compounds, salicylic acid, crystalline calcium carbonate etc;

widely used to break down bladder stone. Acute toxicity test in rat orally is

5019 mg/kg bw, which is practically non toxic but hardly close to toxic dose,

(i.e. 5000 mg/kg bw ) Subchronic toxicity test within 3 months in rat shown

that 600 mg/bw orally has teratogenic activity. Based on the evidence of the

side effect and longterm usage so as to ensure safety for human being,

mutagenicity test should be taken. Mutagenicity test of 50% ethanolic

extract of Kejibeling leaves was done by using Ames method as reverse

mutation system with 5 bacteria i.e. Typhoid bacillus TA 98, TA 100, TA

1535 TA 1537 and Escheria coli WP2 uvrA either with or without S9

metabolic activator; to detect point of mutation. Positive and negative

control was used. Result of the study show that 50% ethanolic extract of

Kejibeling leaves has no mutagenic activity.
