Hi all-

For someone trying to learn more about the treatment of cancer with

TCM, are Jeffry Yuen's lectures worthwhile? I know he comes from a

very idiosyncratic lineage, but I am curious if anyone with more

experience treating cancer thinks his stuff is good? Thanks.

Hi Stephen,

I'll give you a little background so that you can better understand my point

of reference. I studied at PCOM San Diego including OM 8 (Pediatrics & Oncology

with Yibin Wang from Nan Jing), I've taken the Special elective on Oncology

(with Yuan Wang from Chendu),

PCOM San Diego

Spring 2003 OM 8 - Pediatrics & Oncology - Yibin Wang (from Nanjing)

Fall 2004 Special Elective - Oncology - Yuan Wang (from Chendu)

17th Pacific Symposium 2005

Lecture – Cancer Care & – Jeffrey Yuen

Workshop – Cancer Care & – Jeffrey Yuen

Post-Symposium Workshop - Cancer Care & - Jeffrey Yuen

Chinese Herbal Medicine 1st Annual Conference

2003 Lecture – TCM Understanding of Cancer – Tai Lahans

12th Pacific Symposium (2000)

Lecture – Treating Cancer – Misha Cohen

Lecture – Support for Cancer Patients – Miki Shima

Workshop – Support for Cancer Patients – Miki Shima

I've also taken classes in Oncology at UCSD and I wrote a paper on the

treatment of Breast cancer with Anti-neoplastic agents... (I have a pretty

strong background in western sciences.) I also have studied Qigong with Dr. Nan

Lu who heads up the women's breast cancer prevention project.

I'm not trying to impress anybody on the contrary I am trying to indicate what

my level of understanding is so that you have a reference point when considering

my opinion. That way you will be able to know how to weight my opinion when

comparing it with someone who has more experience. (I've only treated four

Cancer patients with adjunctive therapy using TCM.) But, at least I know a lot

more now then if I had rendered an opinion when I was a first year student.

This being said I really resonate well with the teachings of Jeffrey Yuen! I

find that his Taoist perspective helps me to understand the nature of Cancer

from a body, mind & spirit relationship. Basically, if the body is weak then we

promote remission, and if it is strong enough then we

I don't think a summary would do justice to his work here. What I can tell

you is that I particularly enjoyed was the way he makes use of different

specific techniques for accessing the different meridians depending on the type

of meridian and the depth of the meridian (i.e. shaking technique w/ divergent

meridians, etc.).

In the lectures that I attend with him the use of specific herbal medicine

from a clinical perspective was wanting however, the theory was present and

could be applied by an herbalist with a reasonably strong background.

I give it 5 stars out of 5! Someone else may think otherwise... if they are

into the cut & dry clinical perspective then it might not appeal as much to

them. But, if they are into the holistic (body, mind, spirit) perspective and

willing to work with the concept that thoughts precede emotions which precedes

action ... and if a tumor exists that there must be an underlying predisposition

of an energetic condition that allowed that tumor to manifest. Based on these

concepts, unless we address that underlying condition then the patient's

recovery could be more difficult and there could be an increased likelihood of a

relapse in my opinion. I know I'm hanging myself out there but, you asked for

my opinion so, there you have it!

Sincerely,

Steve

P.S. His lectures are available on CD.

Steve,

With regard to Cancer and CM, I can highly recommend Li Peiwen's

book. It is grounded in approach and very useful in clinical

settings. It also has quite a few herbal forumulas that you won't

find elsewhere. It has been a great resource in treating Cancer

patients.

Best Regards,

J. van Es
