Guest guest
What are the top books currently for applying Chinese Herbs externally? I am interested in topics in wound and infection healing, including treating staph, lesions, bed sores, etc. Thanks, Tim Sharpe
Guest guest
I don't think there are much by the way of topical applications books. I have a variety of notes from different sources I'd be happy to share if you have a more specific case in mind. Preparations that go on open wounds should be somewhat refined, at some point being heat processed to kill off bacteria, and filtered to avoid mechanical irritants, though sterilization is not realistic, or even productive as it would probably denature a lot of the substances you want to use. I have had some success in treating chronic sores related to psoriasis and eczema using topical ointments with internal herbs. It is likely that any treatment of longstanding sores will require internal as well as external treatment. In most longstanding cases, whatever the primary causative factor is, it is useful to include herbs that move blood, as the lesions are typically not receiving blood and qi due to stagnation and vacuity. That said, external treatments can use what are considered harsh herbs with some impunity as they bypass the stomach, so cold bitter herbs are quite useful on the surface and have many fewer drawbacks. With uncomplicated irritation four yellows powder (2p da huang, 2p huang qin, 1p huang lian, 2p huang bai) is quite useful, and can also be used to treat trauma when the presentation is " toxic heat like " (lot of heat, redness and swelling). It is handy to keep around for boils, and works a little on acute acne, though it stains a bit...
