Guest guest
I have a client, female, 43, with MC of bilateral burning feet, mainly the lateral halves and more on the right. It also itches when it's intense. There's little visible. She's had 'athlete's foot' in the past where it was cracking between the toes. This is very different. I can see just a tiny bit of white flakey skin but not in the areas where she's hot. She awakes with the burning. It doesn't seem to be neurological. (but she has had a cervical laminectomy.) I have virtually never elicited '5 palms heat' from anyone--only her feet are hot. Her sleep is disturbed--she tends to jerk awake early in the night, choking, and can't get back to sleep for hours. She's on 1/2 an ambien which is the only sleep remedy that's made a difference. She's been advised to go for a sleep study. Her eyes feel puffy and moist ('dewy'), more with eye strain. The rims are red. She has some hot flashing and is taking a progesterone cream. She also has flushing of her cheeks, and a rosacea diagnosis. Her tongue is puffy and pale, TM. Her pulse string-taut at LV and empty everywhere else. She is very resistant to taking herbs. If I felt more certain I could make a difference, I could probably convince her to take them. Acupuncture has been somewhat helpful for her eyes, only, so far. I'm a little puzzled by so much, seeming, vacuity heat, with the pulse and tongue but I guess that can happen. Her digestion's good and she's fatigued in the evenings only. I'm working with her on getting off alcohol, caffeine and refined carbs. I'd love to have some guidance-- thank you, Marian

Guest guest
Beyond acupuncture, have you considered B12 injections (methylcobalamin) Can also try sublingual, but I think injections work better. Guest guest
I just gave her a second infrared light treatment, on the chance there is neuropathy. She was off alcohol, caffeine and refined carbs since the 1st infrared a couple days ago, and she was improved, but it's hard to know what helped as yet. It was the way she described the sensation as 'hot' that made me think metabolic. She probably has a borderline high blood sugar so I'm recommending she get a home blood glucose tester. I suppose there could be a combination of factors. thank you, Marian , " Alon Marcus " <alonmarcus wrote: > > marian are you sure its not neuropathy? did you try the light > > > > > > > > > - > Marian Blum, L.Ac., DNBAO > > Thursday, April 19, 2007 11:49 AM > burning feet > > > I have a client, female, 43, with MC of bilateral burning feet, > mainly the lateral halves and more on the right. With the empty pulses and the vacuity issues that you are seeing, the first thought that came into my mind from a purely acupuncture channel point of view is to systematically clear the Taiyang channel first treatment and then the Shaoyang channels next, as heat can build in the yang channels due to vacuity in the yin organs. For instance, B62, SI3, Back Shu points K7 to support the K , and after about 20 minutes guasha over the dorsal zone. For Shaoyang GB 41 TW5 Lv 3 Sp6 Cv12 & 6 St 25, 36, Gv20 LI4, with a heat lamp on the abdomen for middle heater vacuity. These would be two " do no harm " treatments that would build and support the yin while releasing excess in the yang. Just a thought . R. Cooper L.Ac. Guest guest
Malabsorption was what I was thinking about, and I have seen people in her age group with similar symptoms benefit from the supplementation. Sometimes it was with people who were taking prescription antacids (proton pump inhibitors). They can block absorption of B12 and cause similar issues. But you are right, if this is the problem there could be a number of other causes. Guest guest
Marian, I had a patient who also took Ambien and had " burning feet, " especially at night. I tried yin and jing tonics with some small improvements. Cold water foot baths before bed seemed to work well. But, my theory now is that it was a strange side effect of the Ambien. (If you recall, another side effect of Ambien is sleepwalking/excessive eating with no recollection by the patient. My patient also did this.) Just FYI. Guest guest
Malinda, Good idea. I was thinking m/b drug side effect ... do you know, did your patient get off the Ambien and all those symptoms improved right away? This patient says other sleep aids make her groggy in the am. We need to get to the bottom of why she awakes gasping since that's why she's on the Ambien in the first place. thank you, Marian , " Malinda Gibbons, L.Ac.
