Guest guest
Does anyone have experience making formulas for pets? My dog was recently diagnosed with pancreatitis with a possible bile duct obstruction. She's on an IV and the vet is pumping her up with anti-biotics....which I know will kill her faster than the pancreatitis. She's actually my parents' dog, but my wife and I are very close to her. We just convinced my parents this morning not to put her down quite yet. I think she still has a fighting chance and she's not suffering too much. If the pancreatitis is caused by a duct obstruction, Yin Chen Hao Tang comes to mind, with herbs like Jin Qian Cao, Shi Wei etc. I'd be grateful to hear from anyone who has experience in this. Thanks Paul
Guest guest
Hello! I'm the staff acupuncturist/herbalist in a local veterinary clinic. What you describe sounds much like a case I treated a few years ago. The patient was an older, female Rotwiller with what the vet described as a " sludge filled gall bladder and pancreatic issues " . The dog was quite yellow, vomiting and very lethargic. I was given a very short time line to resolve the problem due to the owner's finical restrictions. I had Evergreen's Dissolve GS in my kit and did acupuncture treatments with the typical points and hoped for the best. She pulled through and lived several more years - a happy dog (on a raw diet) I do not recommend the use of tea pills for cats and dogs - they shoot right through the gut undigested - I do recommend granules, tablets or capsules. Give it a try - when euthanasia is your other option what have you got to loose? Gloria Garland L.Ac., Dipl. Ac. & Ch. Guest guest
Paul, You can treat the dog with essentially the same treatments you would give a human. Keep the dog's weight in mind when giving herbs. You can mix the decoction into food, especilaly if there is some raw meat mixed in (BTW: dogs do much better with a raw meat and bone diet, with small amounts of veggies mixed into the meat at least five times a week, this in itself will have profound effects on the health of the dog). You can also do acupuncture, but it depends on the dog. I've never treated this problem in a dog, but I would look at it as though it were a human and prescribe accordingly. Good luck and feel free to email me privately if you have other questions. I have treated quite a few dogs and used to make formulas for a vet for all kinds of animals, they generally respond very well to the plant medicine. Guest guest
Thanks for your responses. It's tricky making a differential diagnosis for a dog. None of the vets seem to know whether or not there is a gallbladder obstruction. Though she does have pancreatitis and compromised liver function. The most recent vet we saw wants to give her a combination of Sam-e and amoxocillin (anti-biotic). He's concerned that her liver is too weak to handle the natural bacteria from the gut. The question I have is how much relative excess and deficiency is there. She is weak, with little appetite, so I want to boost qi. Yet she is still vomitting green bile and is still slightly jaundiced. I think she needs a clearing formula, but I don't want to injure her Zheng Qi. I'm also concerned about the antibiotics. I understand that they are necessary when they're necessary, but I don't have the medical knowledge to make that call. I can't argue with the doctor and don't want to make things worse if her liver is in danger of failing completely.
