Old romanisation before PinYin

Dear scholars and linguistics

 

I have need of your help.

 

I have recently started to read some of the french books of the

Vietnamese dr Nguyen Van Nghi.

Some of these books date from the end of the sixties and early

seventies. They pre-date the common use of PinYin romanisation in

France.

 

Though I don't have any problems with the french language itself, I

do sometimes stumble a bit in reading due to the form of romanisation

that is used in these books.

 

Being of french origin I thought that it might use the EFEO-system

from the french Ecole Francais d'Extreme Orient.

But refering to the lists available on the internet of this EFEO-

system it doesn't give a 100% match.

 

Let me give you some examples that I cannot relate to any system of

romanisation that I know of:

- Tchang Tzeu PinYin: Zhang Zi

- Ling Tsrou PinYin: Ling Shu

- Yong PinYin: Ying

- Oe PinYin: Wei

- Tchremm PinYin: Chen (name of month)

- Ra¨¦ PinYin: Hai (name of month)

- Tchr¨¦ou PinYin: Chou (name of month)

 

On the other hand I notice that this romanisation often does conform

to the EFEO-system, so I think it must be related.

 

Does anyone recognise this system of romanisation and, better still,

could you point me to a website with a mapping of this system to

PinYin?

I was using the old romanization (that predates Pin Yin romanization) for

Mandarin until maybe 10 years ago when I started learning CM. However, the

romanization you shared here doesn't ring the bell to me. Are you sure it's not

the romanization of Vietnamese pronounciation which was translated from Chinese?
