It is more than a materia medica it also tells you how to grow the herbs in the US. Guest guest
True. It does have some cultivation info. My point was that it is not a formulary, where an herb's status as envoy, emperor, etc. is discussed. THe title " Herbal Emissaries " actually relates to the idea that Chinese herbs act as emissaries for China when they are used in the West. - Bill , " suecochrane36 " <suecochrane wrote: > > I think the word 'Emissaries' refers to the building of a working > relationship between the 2 authors. Guest guest
Actually, I am pretty sure that 'Emissaries' is referring to the individual plants acting as emissaries or representatives bringing Chinese medicine to the West, rather than a reference to the authors themselves. It is a decent book with tidbits on cultivation & other info that spans Eastern medicinal uses, and medicinals that were brought to the West as ornamentals (and some that became invasive pests). " More plants have been introduced from China to American & European gardens than from any other part of the world, and many of the Asian species grown as ornamentals - such as forsythia, gardenia, peonies & mums - are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine.
