Guest guest
Has anyone made honey pills before? How does the process go? Geoff > > Grind Hbs & bind w honey as pills; Taste: Sweet-Sour & Acrid; Astringent
Guest guest
The way I watched and helped my teacher prepare honey pills was as following: A prescription of usually around 30 or so herbs were put together to suit the patients pattern. The herbs are ground to a very fine powder and then sifted. Since they are essentially taken in a raw form, many herbs have to be taken in very small quantities (more so for the toxic herbs). This is why the prescription itself was always big, so that many herbs taken in small amounts would still add up to having a good therapeutic outcome. A good quality honey was then cooked over low flame for a long time, so as to congeal it down to a very stcky paste. Using a standard food mixer, much like bakers use for mixing dough, the honey and ground herbs are mixed together until a nice slightly stcky dough is formed. Then smaller hand sized balls of the dough are rolled through a big pasta type roller into flat cakes. These cakes are then put through the pasta roller again to form long linguini type strips. These strips are then put through sideways so that they are cut into little balls. We would then go through these and pick out any that are inconsistant in shape and size. Sometimes if the herbs are very sticky, some of the ground powder is dusted over them. Generally my teacher would make enough for a three month period, keeping most of it in the freezer. A standard dose of these was about 15 grams, 3 times a day. Which was about 15 pills, 3 times a day. Trevor , " G Hudson " <crudo20 wrote: > > Has anyone made honey pills before? Guest guest
Thanks for the description Trevor. Do these end up like the hard pills you see in the typical herb pill bottle? I've seen one kind of pill that is a large chunk that you chew and swollow, but I'm not sure what the difference is in naming (ie, wan vs. ??) Guest guest
Hi Geoff, These honey pills tended to be very chewable. Although, depending on the type of herbs used, how long the honey was congealed, and what the herb to honey ratio was would determine how hard or soft the pills would be. I am not sure of the difference in naming either. Trevor , " G Hudson " <crudo20 wrote: > > Thanks for the description Trevor. Guest guest
That method produces the bigger chewy kind, but if he's using a pasta machine they must be pretty small. The one's I've made are typically about 1/2 " diameter, like the big die da wan. I have to wrap mine in wax paper, lest they stick together... - G Hudson Thursday, July 19, 2007 2:01 PM Re: Honey pills? Thanks for the description Trevor. Guest guest
That's intersting - I forgot all about those big chewy die da wan. How's the taste of the big chew & swollow pills? Geoff
Guest guest
It ranges from mostly OK to pretty nasty. Getting a really fine grind is important. When I learned to make them I ground up the herbs only so so and didn't strain the powder, they had the texture of mulch, yummy. Par - G Hudson Monday, July 23, 2007 1:08 PM Re: Honey pills? Guest guest
At the time I was borrowing a grinder from a friend, one of those small mushroom shapped ones that locks into a stand and has about a one pound raw capacity. I think if your serious about doing something like this one of the hopper fed machines with a mesh strainer at the outflow would work a lot better.
