Guest guest
Doug and all, Is there any way for to protect us from scams like the one mentioned in the recent postings? I also received one identical to the one about the model. Not very likely that a model from Italy would have a gig in Athens, Ohio, but oh well . . . . Guest guest
An answer would have a couple of parts. The way to protect yourself is to not respond to them. If there is any mention of payment especially through money orders etc... you can be 100% sure it is a scam. (I watched a 20/20 TV report about this stuff) Your email addresses are protected outside persons and from each other within UNLESS you post your email addresses at the end of messages. I spend a fair amount of time rejecting people who " are interested in herbs " or " into chinese things " for membership into CHA. In addition, people are moderated until I know who they are and trustworthy. This means I have to approve each of their messages. (Unfortunately I find changing persons moderation status quite time consuming so I tend to wait along time to do so. ) In addition, flags many messages as SPAM even from well-known members but for some reason they find suspicious. I then have to approve these also. This is happening more and more. That is one reason I would like people to fill in more about themselves on their page. If I see someone went to school at PCOM and practices in Denver, for example, I have some idea of what you are about. For most of us, if you really want to find a person, they are web accessible by Google etc... I assume this is where most of the scammers get their addresses. As far as I know, no one is getting SPAM email via your participation on CHA. These Scammers have full-time jobs and that is looking for people to scam. They just need one out of the thousands and thousands of emails to reply and then sucker to make their living. Don't take it personally. For the most part, although they seem crude in their tactics they can be intelligent and well educated persons. Although, it's not perfect I'm rather pleased with how this group is. Believe me, I've seen that quickly get swamped in SPAM and other wise nasty posts. hope this helps, Doug , " Frances L. Guest guest
Now Frances, Don't deprecate Athens. Back in January 1971, between my first and second semester of college, a buddy of mine and I hitchhiked to visit old high school friends at Kent state, University of Ohio, Athens, and then across to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Beautiful, charming town with wonderful ambiance. 'Have very fond memories of all three places, and lots of stories from that trip! Yehuda " Frances L. Guest guest
Yehuda, I was still laughing about your e-mail on herpes when I clicked on this one and I got to laugh even more! You know, I wasn't born for another 2 years after you started your first semester in College in Athens. ) Glow wrote: Now Frances, Don't deprecate Athens. Guest guest
Hi Doug, Thank you for your good work managing the safety of the CHA list. In my post, I was mainly curious about how such scams get started. I guess it's easy enough to phish for e-addresses for whatever purpose. And Yehuda . . . About Athens, OH, no disparagement meant toward my new home. If I want to see Italian models, I can go to NYC! Love it here.
