Hi,

Does anyone know of a list(s) of medicinals that are banned for one

reason or another? This includes endangered species, dangerous

substances, and those restricted by different government agencies in

various countries (like Ma Huang in the USA and I believe Fu Zi in the

UK).

Thanks!

Hi Carl,

I have a pdf file issued by the Belgian government (Staatsblad, the

law gazette) that contains a list of forbidden substances. The list of

forbidden plants is 8 pages long, for example, and includes many herbs

that are commonly used.

If you would like to see the file (in Dutch and French, plant names

are mentioned in Latin) please send me an email off-list.

Best,

Tom.

Hi,

There may be some question of accuracy regarding the Belgium list of forbiden

herbs. There was a unfavorable reaction to herbal medicine in Belgium following

the problems that were found from the use of guang fan ji instead of han fan ji

during a diet study. The wrong herb was used and it was taken for too long a

time. This resulted in the banning of all herbs containing aristolochiac acid

and consequently the Belgium government elected to err on the side of

conservative nature by banning about 8 pages of herbs. I suspect manyu of the

herbs on this list are probably banned in error. For more infomation please see

Sincerely,

Steve

Hi Steve,

for sure our government chose to be very cautious when they banned all

those herbs. Every herb that was known to be even slightly toxic or

potentially dangerous is on that list, along with many others.

So no, it is not accurate, what would you expect from politics? : )

By the way, there's much more to the aristolochia story than what you

mentioned. I believe I have posted on this subject before - perhaps

you can find it in the archives?

best,

Tom.

There was also much political manuevering in Belgium and the EU (whose

capitol is Brussels) regarding this, with Belgian and French MD's working to get

herbs removed from access to non-MD's, especially herbs that had an action that

paralleled drugs. Also, there were the normal petty ego problems as well, which

I am sure we are all surprised to hear about in the field of medicine.
