Hi All,

My notes on chestnut, gleaned from WWW, are below.

Data in Chinese RARELY mention the Quicken Xue / Antihaemorrhoidal /

Antithrombic Fxs of chestnut; these seem to be mainly a Western use.

In contrast, data in Chinese stress the other Fxs, especially on LV & ST

Qizhi.

I may have mixed up data on Chinese- versus European- Chestnut and

would appreciate comments from experts on or off- list on sorting out the

data below.

Active agents: S / Fr, Fm & Fl have aesculin, a triterpene saponin / glucoside

(also in Crataegus oxyacantha, Fm Bursariae spinosae & Cx Fraxini); aescin

(saponin) is a chemical mixture of acetylated glycosides;iv saponins from

Suoluozi can reduce cerebral edema in patients w stroke / cerebral trauma;

Actions: Strengthen, nourish & calm vessels (Qianghua Zibu Jing Mai) &

promote (Cujin) leg (Xiazhi) venous circulation (Jingmai Xunhuan);

Aesculus S (Qiyeshuzhongzi) extract (Cuiquwu) contains aescin (Qiyesu)

that can release PG F2a, while enhancing venous contraction, strengthening

its walls & reducing capillary permeability, thus reducing oedema from

varicosities; Antiinflammation (Xiaoyan) / correct inflammation (Dui Fayan);

Resists blood coagulation (Dikang Ningxue); Counter circulatory diseases &

help local oedema & swelling; Quicken Xue (Huoxue); Tone Circulation;

True Yin (Peiyu Zhenyin), Conserve & Moisten True Yang (Hanrun

Zhenyang); Aid & Clear Head (Gaishan), back (Bei), loin (Yao); Parasiticide

(Shachong);

W other agents: Aesculin can Quicken Xue & thin blood, reduce its viscosity

& aid its passage back to HT; Aesculin + Aescin decrease venous

permeability to Tx painful varicose veins & haemorrhoids, Stop Pain, prevent

clotting & thrombosis; Aesculus + other Tonic Hbs to soothe & aid healing;

As a Topical gel, aescin (aescinate) + essential phospholipids (AEPL) can

Tx vein- & microcirculatory- changes (varicose veins, spider-veins, venous

insufficiency~ chronic), bruises, swelling, thrombophlebitis & contusions;

chronic venous insufficiency, venous hypertension (CVH), & venous

microangiopathy; can prevent ulceration & boost skin healing; aescin /

aesculin can inhibit oedema & reduce vascular fragility;

Indications: ST Cold w ache & pain (Weihan Zuotong); LV-ST Qizhi (Ganwei

Qizhi); Chest & body~ upper bloating & pain (Xiongxie Zhangtong),

abdomen distension, childhood malnutrition dt parasitism & parasitic pain

haemorrhoids

Cautions: has no serious side effects but has a few minor side effects, like

ST stimulation & nausea; No CI in pregnancy at correct dosage; Caution in

Qixu / Yinxu; Caution: epidermis of S has toxic Aesculins (Qiyesu); for best

oral safety, products should have aesculins removed professionally; S & Fm

have anesthetic effects (Mazui Zuoyong) & souuld not be ingested regularly;

product is safest when used topically; aesculin may cause severe

gastroenteritis; high doses may cause ataxia, twitching, restlessness,

depression, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle weakness, paralysis,

unconsciousness & death; high doses of Suoluozi / aesculin / aescin may

cause LV & KI damage / ST upset; AVOID high doses; AVOID in LV / KI

problems; AVOID in cases w history of thrombosis; Side Effects include
