For those who wish to understand how the nomenclature process developed, here

is a report from the WFCMS committee leader, Professor Wang Kui.

Background and process of the Nomenclature

 

In the establishment conference of World Federation of

Societies on 25-26 September 2003, delegates from various countries suggested

that

WFCMS should carry out a research project on the establishment of standard

Chinese-English TCM nomenclature. Following the

proposal, WFCMS organized specialists worldwide to work out the nomenclature

(draft). Based on the comparative study on more than 100 publications to list

various English translations for every Chinese TCM term and WFCMS suggestions,

the first draft of Chinese-English TCM nomenclature was finished in 2006.

 

From 31 March to 2 April 2006, the ¡ÈInternational Forum on Standard

English

Translation of Basic Terms of ¡É was held in Beijing

cosponsored

by the State Administration of Traditional of P.R. China

(SATCM), World Federation of

Societies(WFCMS), World Federation of Acupuncture and Moxibustion Societies

(WFAS) and People¡Çs Medical Publishing House (PMPH). More than 30

specialists

from USA, UK, Germany, Australia, Israel, P.R. China and Hong Kong of China

participated in the Forum to discuss, edit and revise the

draft.

 

On 2425 June 2006, the WFCMS Chairpersons Conference was held in Beijing.

All WFCMS chairpersons listened to the working report of the research project of

the TCM nomenclature and offered important advice. According to proposes and

advice of the international conferences, the

editorial committee has made more than ten times revisions, and the Standard

Chinese-English TCM Nomenclature was finished in 2007.

 

On 78 April 2007, the Fourth Session of the First Council Board of WFCMS was

held in Guangzhou, China. The International Standard Basic Chinese-English

Nomenclature of was submitted to the WFCMS Council Board for

examination and approval. After discussion and vote, the standard nomenclature

was approved by WFCMS Council Board on 28 April 2007. The approved

Chinese-English nomenclature will be recommended as WFCMS standard for use in

166 WFCMS

member societies in 50 countries and regions. It is scheduled for revision in

every five years.

 

Collaboration with the WHO-WPRO

The World Health Organization Western Pacific Region

Office¡ÊWHO-WPRO¡Ëis

solicitous about the research of WFCMS International Standard Chinese-English

Basic Nomenclature of ¡ÊISN¡Ë. The Regional Adviser

of Traditional

Medicine of WHO-WPRO - Chio Seung-Hoon Ph.D and

WFCMS Secretariat held academic discussions on 13 December 2006 and 13 June

2007, and a collaborative intention has been reached. According to the

collaborative intention, WHO-WPRO provided a copy of WHO International Standard

Terminologies on Traditional Medicine in the Western Pacific Region (IST) to

WFCMS

on 21 June 2007, and WFCMS has revised the WFCMS International Standard

Chinese-English Basic Nomenclature of Chinese

Medicine¡ÊISN¡Ëreferring to IST. To get

maximum identity of English, equivalent for the same terms of Chinese medicine

in both standards, the WFCMS has made revision of ISN in the following three

models:

 

to Revise ISN according to IST:

For example, revised English equivalent of¡ÈÝãʬ¡Éfrom ¡Èqi

level¡É to ¡Èqi aspect

¡É to become identical with IST;

 

to appose English equivalents of IST and ISN:

For example, English equivalent of¡È¢®¢®Ç·Ýã¡Éin IST is ¡Èmeridian

qi¡É, and ¡È

meridian/channel qi¡É in ISN.

 

to Keep different equivalents for discussion in the future:

For example, English equivalent of¡È祡Éin IST is ¡Èbowl¡É,

and ¡Èfu-organ¡É in

ISN; English equivalent of¡Èé¶ÒСÉis ¡Èvisceral syncope¡É in

IST, and ¡È visceral

reversal¡É in ISN.
