- Hi, here is where maybe fools rush in etc., but I have been practicing and

teaching integrated East/West herbalism for over 10 years now

- I routinely pull herbs from the Chinese pharmacopeia into Western usage and

vice versa

- Since my original training was in Western herbalism, my tendency is to work

from the individual herbal monographs and often make up my own formulae

- Here is what I have in my database for Echinacea:

Echinacea ( Echinacea purpurea )

- Part Used: Herb/Root

- Main function: Cooling/Detoxifying Herb for Heat patterns

- Thermal qual.: Cool

- Taste: Slighlty bitter, slightly salty

- Meridians Entered: Lu, LI, St

- Functions:

- Clears Heat and Detoxifies

- Regulates Qi Stagnation

- Dispels Exterior Wind Heat

- Cautions:

- For maximum effectiveness use therapeutic doses only when needed

- Excess may cause nausea

- Toxicity:

- Relatively safe for long term use at tonic dosage levels

(tonic dosage 10% of therapeutic dosage)

- Phyto-chemicals:

- Echincoside, mucopolysaccharides, isobutylamides,

polyacetylenes, phytosterols

- Western Properties:

- Immune stimulant, anti-inflammatory, anti-biotic, detoxifying

diaphoretic, healing, anti-allergenic, strengthens connective tissue

- Notes:

- Used for early onset of colds and flu, fungal infections,

skin diseases, boils, abscesses, asthma, allergic rhinitis,

sore throat, bites/stings, cold sores, genital herpes, shingles,

vaginitis, gingivitis, viral infections, yeast infections.

- I put some of my the monographs up on the Ontario Herbalists Association

website. You can access them all at:

- I have also written an eBook on Integrated East/West Herbalism that I use as

the textbook for teaching
